The original island was very narrow, which limited both its function and its visual impact. After looking at the layout, the kitchen contractor and I agreed that a peninsula made much better use of the space.

The challenge was the location of the exterior door. Keeping seating at the peninsula would have meant shrinking the kitchen itself, so we chose to prioritize cabinetry, counter space, and a more comfortable overall layout instead.

To make up for losing the peninsula seating, we worked together to create a dedicated eating area that better suited how the family actually uses the kitchen every day.

The existing mudroom had a simple bench and small coat rack, but we wanted this space to feel like a true extension of the kitchen. Carrying the beadboard into the mudroom helped connect the two spaces, while the oversized rail for hooks gave the wall a little more character and made it much more functional.

The continuous hook rail was one of those details that raised a few eyebrows during the design process, but it ended up becoming a favorite. The client says it’s now one of the first things people comment on when they walk into her home.

Sometimes the details that feel a little unexpected are the ones that make a space. And things are always easier when you have a wonderful client who trusts the vision!

One of the challenges in this project was to come up with a solution for a side splash in the bar area. The previous tile side splash awkward shape was not it and I also didn’t like the idea of a squared off tile area or a quartz side splash. Fortunately my client loves breadboard so it was an easy sell to create an accent wall which was specifically designed to prevent water damage from the sink.
