Check out this crotch! The figure and the bark inclusion will certainly make for a unique project. The Ash in the second picture has been getting munched on for a while but would make for an amazing bookmatch table. Let’s opt in to wood from your neighborhood.

A nail AND a screw found milling one slab, how did I get so lucky!?
Urban lumber brings with it challenges not typically faced in commercial lumber production. Nails, screws, and even old hardware is frequently found when milling logs. Over time, as the tree grows, it gradually surrounds the foreign object with new layers of wood, effectively “swallowing” it. This process is called compartmentalization, and it allows the tree to continue growing despite the intrusion. This means having to stop and change or sharpen chains slowing down the process.
Can’t say this is my favorite part of the job!

Time for a new logo!
We worked with the talented to bring this idea to life.
The name Cradle to Grave Woodcraft was chosen for its reference to the cradle to grave approach used in evaluating the environmental footprint of a product. This approach considers impacts at each stage of a products life-cycle, from raw material to disposal. Our mission is to give the trees found in our community a second life - removing them from their future of becoming waste and turning them into beautiful pieces that can maintain the carbon they sequester and continue to live on in our community.

Cradle to Grave Woodcraft is an urban wood mill focused on taking the trees that would normally go to the landfill or be cut up into firewood, and milling them into unique wood slabs. These slabs showcase the story of that specific tree through grain and features and can be turned into beautiful pieces you see in community spaces or your own home. Check out our website, cradletogravewood.com! We’ve been busy milling to get new inventory to get added. What tree species do you want to see next?
