I tried designing my son’s nursery. I couldn’t. I was stuck. It’s the only time in my career that I have been really and truly stuck and couldn’t get a design to come together. So I decided to let it go and go with one decision that felt right. The blue walls. I had wanted his nursery to feel like a safari jungle, a peaceful forest, and a little Peter Pan/Swiss family Robinson. A versatile place for boys, toys, and a great imagination! But when I didn’t like any of the designs I mocked up, I just decided to paint the room a blue that inspired me and go from there. As soon as I walked into the painted room I sighed a sigh of relief. It felt right. I still didn’t know what I was doing but I now had somewhere to start. Then slowly it started coming together. A roman shade made out of a cloth my husband brought back from India plus the elephants that were over his crib. An heirloom giraffe kids coat rack made by Great Grandpa. Some forest and lake paintings we did during a wine and paint night here in Greenville. A dark green tent over where the crib would go, a fish net of stuffed animals (inspired by a Scene from the www.Hook-Movie.com ), an oversized stuffed animal alligator Jonathan won as a kid at the dentist, and a large teddy bear from Nanna. It’s not the most designed nursery in the world, but it is oh so special! Filled with fun, imaginative details and delightful pieces inherited from family, Mason’s room finally felt like the peaceful, adventurous, outdoorsy, tree-house/safari inspired room I always wanted for him. Sometimes you have to take the not-so-perfect approach in order to get a space that feels personal and meaningful. And that’s how it should be. We don’t need perfect palaces, we need homes full of delightful details and joyful memories that make space for more special moments with those we love!

Why do I have a bowl of mud and a dirty piece of paper with my paint samples? Because I’m choosing a color for my back deck. My dog and son track dirt onto the deck and the current dark red color- besides being a color I hate- shows every bit of dirt. So, I want the deck to be as close to the natural color of the clay in the backyard as possible so that when the dirt dries on the deck it blends in. Not that I don’t ever clean the deck, but when even the smallest bit of dirt shows it makes the whole deck look dirty. So this is a new idea I’m going to test out at my house and see how it works. Granted, if I like the resulting color. 😉

I have a hard time promoting myself. What I don’t have a hard time promoting are brands, people, a story, and a mission I can get behind. One of those is .coffee.art , a local family owned art gallery, coffee shop, and totally vibing hangout spot. Geneviève’s art is ethereal, Arin’s specialty coffee delectable, and the interior is colorfully cheerful. Located on Stone Avenue it is conveniently close to Wade Hampton, Main St, and with on-site free parking and an inspiring, quiet, light-filled cafe to work in. We first discovered Canvas during the coffee crawl a few months ago and instantly fell in love. One of the things that I love is their story- how when Arin would get home from work Geneviève would handoff the kids to him and head out to the garage to paint as a way to have some time to herself after becoming a mom. As a new mom myself, I can really sympathize with this and honestly, I’ve also considered taking up painting! What’s really inspiring though is that they developed this into a unique concept business and actually launched it. Starting any business is difficult, starting a business where both parents will be entrepreneurs who want to maintain family life is even harder. So perhaps what I’ll do next is take one of her painting classes so I can learn from someone who’s already grown into being an exceptional artist and also support a local small business. I’ve always found painting soothing, but I’ve only attempted painting my house before, never a canvas. I’d love to hear more of Geneviève‘s story, use her work in clients homes in the future, and drink more of Arin’s delicious coffee. But right now they need our help to stay open. …after receiving a private tour of the historic neighborhood from her and her adorable dog Rocco, we exchanged numbers and both went home. I had just made my first “Friend from the streets” as I affectionately call her (yes, I stole this from Phoebe in the TV show a favorite of Jonathan’s and mine.) Her name is Michaela. Having moved here 2 years ago, her and her husband live in the stunning modern townhomes just across the street from ‘s shop We Took To The Woods (which I will be posting soon, so stay tuned!). Her lovely Czech accent adds to her charming manner and bright eyes. A couple weeks later we went to the First Friday Art Crawl with a group of friends where we got to know each other a little better. Now, we’re teaching each other photography and YouTube skills, visiting coffee shops and local boutiques together, talking all things baby & motherhood, and enjoying exploring Greenville as much as we can before her sweet baby girl arrives end of July! As we’ve talked I learned that she previously worked as a IVF concierge helping connect women with quality and affordable IVF treatments but has now joined her husband’s business helping run his successful YouTube channel teaching people host proprietary Physical Therapy method. I also learned that we both have an appreciation for style, and would rather not been seen in public unfashionable dressed though sometimes practically and comfort win. Making friends has been difficult as an adult and recently I’d decided to not care about it. But I never would have guessed that I’d start making friends when I grabbed my camera and Took To The Streets.

Nothing is going to be too hard really. This is how I feel about construction. My fascination with houses began as a little girl. I don’t know what it was, but I started sketching them at 5, then building houses in my parents shed, in the dirt out of stray bricks, and hauling curtains up into the tree to make a tree house. My friends and I even built an underground house using tumbleweeds to create the walls for the 6’ wide 3’ deep pit we’d dug in the desert behind their yard. And in spite of having just naively built a home for rattlesnakes and scorpions, we somehow never encountered any even in our secret underground tunnel entrance. Katrina hit New Orleans when I was a teenager; watching the story from CA via the television I couldn’t help but think- why weren’t these houses built better and more suited to the known weather and geographical conditions of the area? This turned my fascination into an obsession that lives on today. When I recently started learning photography I found myself wandering around the historic district of downtown Greenville, looking for something interesting to photograph. I came upon this duplex being renovated and of course it captured my attention. In person, not only is this cottage itself architecturally interesting, but I found the geometric lines of the construction materials and the juxtaposition of the brick edifice and plants with the raw lumber to be intriguing. Photos do not do justice to the fascination it brought me. I could have sat there and looking at and thinking about what it was, could be, and will be, for hours. Noticing the windows, shadows, approach. Thinking about how I would renovate it and laying out the floor plan in my mind just from what I could see from the exterior. It took everything in me to not violate that no trespassing sign. 😉 But as I was taking photos and exercising my skills of observation I was interrupted by a lovely lady walking her dog. She asked if it was my home, and I replied no, I’m just learning photography. She noticed Mason who I was wearing in the baby carrier and I noticed her little baby bump. After 45 minutes of chatting we decided to finish her walk together… tbc!

There’s a little building tucked off the street between a warehouse and a historical abandoned building in the old industrial part of downtown Greer. It’s unassuming and simple on the outside, and the few parking spaces are filled with trucks. It would be easy to overlook and drive right past, but if you did so you’d be missing out on one of the most charming, cheerful, and homey coffee shops in the area. is vibrant, calm, and a local favorite as evidenced by nearly every seat being full. It’s the kind of place I remember going into with my Grandpa in Texas where you always run into someone you know and are sure to receive both the sage wisdom and cheeky wit of the old country folk. Colorfully filled with cool details, western storybook style mural, and an actual vintage saddle, this shop invites you to grab a cup o’ Joe and settle in for a peaceful morning visiting, working, or reading the local news. Their menu includes their own custom drinks, and every detail from the pottery mugs to the Cowboy Skeleton amuse and delight! If you are looking for a hidden gem with delicious drinks and cool vibes, this is the place for you.

Stepping into was like stepping through a portal into Italy. Delicious Italian pastries and beverages, hearing foreign accents and more different languages being spoken than English, and a Milan inspired aesthetic made it feel like we’d been instantly transported to an Italian vacation. It was somehow both calm and energetic, comfortable and interesting. Not to mention the macaroon, matcha, and espresso were flawlessly delectable! If you’re someone who loves exploring new places, traveling Europe, visiting Italy, or are here from Europe, Sole Espresso bar is the place for you. I know we will be back! Jonathan had the baby so I picked up my camera and drove downtown to get out of the house for 2 hours before I’d have to be home to put him to bed. I was looking for a cottage to photograph. Earlier that week I’d discovered the historic district of downtown Greenville; I was hooked. With my life long love of houses and my fascination with European style charm, these lovely historical homes sparked a desire in me to photograph them. I was back on a different street, hoping to find an adorable house and homeowner outside so I could ask permission to photograph their cottage. It was blue hour, the sun almost setting, trees overhanging the street casting lovely shadows. I’d walked nearly the entire length of the street but found no one home. About to leave, I spotted at the end of the street the most enchanting cottage I’ve ever seen. A little dark shake siding poked out from beneath a cover of vines, while the roof was supported by delicately curved thick white eaves. A short rock wall and French style hedge bounded a beautiful garden with a bird bath nestled in the hedge, and terra cotta pots of flowers lined a bench under the window. A large blue fir stood as a gentle sentry guarding this little paradise. Just as I was about to walk away I heard a greeting and turned just in time to see a little boy in a red jacket run and jump into the arms of a white haired gentleman who spun him around in delight. This greeting of neighbors was even more beautiful than the cottage. I said hello and walked by. Not wanting to invade their privacy I proceeded to take photos of the street again. Suddenly I noticed the gentleman crossing the street towards me. He asked if I was doing a creative project. “Yes I am”, I said, “it’s called Cafes, Cottages, and Community” and I proceeded to tell him about this idea I’d had only 2 days prior. He was wearing a linen shirt, well loved but neat khaki pants, sandals, and a neck tie with bold tortoise shell glasses. His name is Bob McKittrick, and the vine covered cottage I loved so much was his. As we chatted and I photographed his home I learned that he also owns a shop just around the corner from his cottage… to be continued.
