There are a lot of little things I’ve learned through this project...and most of them come from trial and error (or generous people sharing tips online).

These are a few things that have made this project so much easier. Hopefully they’ll help on your next one!

How it started...
Turns out 50+ years of shellac doesn’t give up without a fight. 😅

Tip #1: Screws in the ends of the door

One of my favorite Instagram finds! Drive a screw into the top and bottom of the door so you can flip it over without the freshly painted face getting scratched.

Tip #2: Don’t wash your roller between coats

Cover your paint trays and wrap your rollers tightly in plastic wrap between coats. It keeps the paint from drying out and saves a ton of cleanup.

Tip #3: Painting a door two different colors?

Paint the edge the color of the room it faces when the door is open.
It’s one of those little details that makes the finished project look intentional.

Tip #4: My favorite painting combo

✔️ 3/8” nap roller for a smooth finish
✔️ Sherwin-Williams Urethane Trim Enamel
I’ve used it on the trim, doors, and cabinets, and the coverage and durability have been excellent.

Living on the edge 😳

Touch up time but carpet has been installed.

Sometimes I feel extra material, like drop cloths or paper, extra containers, etc. only increases the risk to get paint somewhere you didn’t realize….and then somehow it’s everywhere!?!

Good news! all the trim was touched up and nail holes filled with no incident 🙌

I found a Q-tip to be the perfect option to keep things contained and just the right size for touch ups. Just another use for those little tools Q-tips

Lately, I’ve been practicing creativity without an expectation of perfection.
Instead of worrying about making something “good,” I’ve been focused on just making something.

The ripping.
The layering.
The scribbles.
The paper that catches my eye and becomes the starting point.

Sometimes I begin with a color palette. Sometimes it’s a quote or a scrap of vintage paper that inspires the whole page.

There isn’t a right way to do it.
Just the joy of creating.
It’s become one of my favorite ways to slow down, quiet the noise, and make something with my hands.
If you’ve been craving a creative outlet but don’t know where to start, that’s exactly why I’ve fallen in love with junk journals and why I’ve started putting together creative kits. Sometimes all we need is a few beautiful supplies and permission to play.

Creating a home rooted in joy, connection, and everyday life doesn’t end at the back door.

Outdoor spaces, big or small, finished or still a work in progress, are a must-have in my opinion.

This has become our favorite “room” of the house.
Summer nights.
Warm fires.
Baseball on the TV.
Good conversation.
Slowing down.

That’s what creating home looks like to me. 🫶

A little craft project for ya…

Color a popsicle stick.
Add some googly eyes.
Give it a fun little smirk.
Glue on some string arms.
Add some beads or hot glue at the end for hands.

And suddenly… you have the cutest little bookmark. 📚

A fun little afternoon activity to do with the kids, especially if you have a few books waiting to be read, too. 😉

No perfect renovation reveal here…

Just a little how it started / how it’s going because we have, in fact, made progress.

It’s been dusty, messy and not always as smooth and quick as we would like. But we can’t expect much different 🙃

The very glamorous process of pulling up 50+ year old carpet… that was underneath the carpet we already had. Lots of matted and glued backing! While we would love to have the stairs refinished it just isn’t in the cards for this remodel. The next home owners someday might be up for it!

Trim is painted and installed, cabinets were removed, painted and reinstalled. And carpet is in! It is feeling very fresh and clean.

More to come, but enjoying the progress made!

A little progress on the front landscaping and walkway project.

We still need to add the sand and finish the joints, but I couldn’t wait to share how it’s coming together.

One thing I was really hoping for was a natural, collected feel. We intentionally mixed stone colors and asked the installers to use snapped edges whenever possible rather than making everything perfectly straight and uniform.

Thank you for understanding my goal and capturing it beautifully! Every stone was placed with intention, but the goal was for the finished result to feel effortless.

I enjoy creating spaces that feel authentic to the house rather than simply new. Spaces that honor its character AND making it work for the way we live.

One thing I didn’t expect to love so much about remodeling this old house is the random little pieces of history hidden inside the walls.

Recently while pulling off old trim upstairs, we flipped over one of the boards and found this stamp:
Denison & Coerper — Hartford, Wis.

Doing a little searching I found they were a Hartford based merchant from the mid-1800s through the early 1900s. Involved in general supply, lumber, and local banking.

Last time we repaired a wall, we found an ortho bill from 1932 tucked inside’

It’s so fun finding these little glimpses into everyday life from the people who lived here before us. Nothing museum-worthy, Just normal life.

Makes me think we should all leave something behind in our walls for the next family someday.

A note. A drawing. A photo. Event a bill! Something small that says “we were here too.” 🤍
