Why should a custom rug be one of the very first selections in a room?
Because the best interiors are designed with intention — not assembled by finding pieces that simply “fit.”
The rug establishes the foundation for nearly everything else:
the furniture plan, the scale of the other pieces in the room, the palette, the fabrics, the movement, and ultimately the feeling the space carries when you walk into it.
And yes, custom rugs also happen to carry some of the longest lead times in the design process because true handmade craftsmanship takes time. But beyond timing, this is really about cohesion.
Imagine trying to source the “perfect” 12’6” x 13’9” rug off a rack somewhere after every other selection has already been finalized. Suddenly the proportions feel compromised, the palette becomes limiting, and the room starts revolving around what’s available instead of what was envisioned.
This is one of the clearest examples we see every day of why custom matters.
A thoughtfully designed rug makes a room feel layered and intentional — instead of a collection of beautiful pieces trying to work together after the fact.
At NIBA, we often say the rug is not the finishing touch.
It’s the starting point.
