Monday. Sourdough and snack trays. Math and laundry.

I’ve been gathering with a small group of friends lately to study Titus 2. One of the main instructions for married women in that text is to be “busy at home.”

Being “busy at home” translates from the Greek oikourgos, meaning “a keeper at home. A watcher or guard.”

It is not simply being at home to be home. It’s not being bored at home. It is not filling the day with “busy work.” It indicates intention and diligence. It is a high calling.

Here is the divine mystery in this: when we do things God’s way, even tasks that feel menial or thankless, our needs are met. First, we obey, then we are surprised to find ourselves blessed. First, we deny ourselves, then we find the burden light.

Blessed by sourdough and snack trays. Blessed by math and laundry, because the heart of it all is so much more than just those things. I am obeying the Lord. I am creating, keeping, and guarding a place of peace, comfort, and order for my family.

Housekeeping. Homemaking. What a privilege.

There’s little doubt that my love for a beautiful table was born at my Grandma Helen’s house.

Pretty plates, cloth napkins, placemats on tablecloths, stemmed glasses, footed bowls, cups on saucers, mixed patterns and colors all singing together. Her presentation was always fancy, but somehow never stuffy. It was comforting and gracious and celebratory. It was her.

She thrifted and collected and artfully arranged until everyday meals became special occasions. And they were special occasions, because we were together.

I’ve adored this Norman Rockwell painting (Freedom from Fear) for years, but it feels especially poignant right now. The image of parents tucking children peacefully into bed, while the headline on the newspaper in the father’s hand describes the horrors of war.

The innocence of childhood- what a treasure.

Safe haven for our loved ones- what a gift.

These daily rhythms, undisturbed- what a grace.

Come quickly, Lord.

“Create a home that nourishes, nurtures, and sustains life and beauty. Create a space that supports vibrant, joyful, productive living and supports growth of body, soul, and spirit. It is all about how to order your living space and what happens there to embody the joy and beauty of God’s own spirit. Home was intended to be so much more than just a place of bare essentials.” - .clarkson

Our homes- tools from the Lord, to be used for Him. Everything in them belongs to Him- the people and all the stuff. And it IS just stuff, no matter how pretty or sentimental it is. He sustains the lives under our roofs. He strengthens the bodies and comforts the souls. Any beauty we create in our homes is in His strength. May we see these structures clearly for what they are- from and for Him. May we steward them humbly. May they point us to our eternal home.
