I love when past clients circle back with a new project. Because we already have a strong foundation, we’re able to jump right back into collaborating without missing a beat.

In my first project with these clients, I furnished and styled their living room and primary bedroom. A couple of years later, they were ready to do the same for their dining space.

They’re the kind of family that’s always surrounded by friends and opening their home to host. Even with a standard-size dining room, they knew they wanted a table that could flex—pull up a few extra chairs, fit a few more people, and keep things comfortable. Oh and a Lazy Susan was a non-negotiable.

Looking for an interior designer who can help you think through furnishing or remodeling your home to serve the rhythm of your family’s life? Let’s start a conversation

Finally got to lean into an elevated bachelor feel on this one. Deep blacks, warm browns, leather, rich wood tones—and furniture that feels substantial and grounded. Moody without feeling heavy. Masculine without feeling cold. The trick was investing in the right foundational pieces—so the space feels great now and can evolve naturally as life changes.

I think the key to making changes mid-remodel comes down to communication and having a team of professionals who help you make informed decisions. Sometimes, changing course is actually the right move.

A remodel requires flexibility. I’m a big believer in planning things to a T, while staying nimble and collaborative when something needs to shift. The goal isn’t rigidity, it’s thoughtful decision making.

At the end of the day, isn’t that what we all want? A team aligned around a common goal, willing to work together to find the best solution for the project at hand.

When we laid out this tile with the contractor, we focused on a few key decisions that shape how the space feels.

We chose a vertical stack to draw your eye from the floor to the ceiling. It subtly makes the room feel taller and more open.

The niche was designed to visually disappear. By aligning full tile above and below, the ledge nearly vanishes instead of interrupting the wall.

For transitions, we used a bullnose tile. It creates a softer, more intentional edge wherever tile meets another surface.

And finally, we carried the tile over the pony wall. It keeps the water where it belongs and creates a cleaner transition between the tub and the wall.

These are the types of details that you don’t notice right off the bat, but play a big role in a clean and intentional design.

Who should you call first when you’re planning a remodel—the contractor, designer, or architect?

The short answer: it’s flexible.

What matters most isn’t the order—it’s building the team early. You might start with a contractor and loop in a designer a week later. Or begin with a designer and bring in the others as the scope takes shape. That’s completely fine.

The key is not getting too far down the path with any one professional before consulting the rest. Remodels have a lot of intersections, and the best decisions happen when everyone’s perspective is on the table early.

Start with the professional you’re most confident in—and build the team from there.

Why are design plans and construction documents important for remodels?

Like any strong performance or coordinated team effort, a documented, agreed-upon plan is invaluable.

Musicians don’t step on stage without rehearsals. Athletes don’t walk onto the field without a game plan. A remodel should be no different.

Opening up walls without clear plans for layout, materials, and ex*****on is like assembling a team that’s never played together and hoping that making it up as you go leads to a win.

Once demolition begins, an invisible clock starts ticking. Time and money immediately become precious resources. Everyone involved is incentivized to keep the project moving, and without clear direction, decisions can be made quickly—and sometimes without your input—simply to maintain momentum.

Construction documents protect you from having to make hundreds of decisions on the fly, in the middle of chaos, without the benefit of seeing the full picture.

They allow you to think clearly, intentionally, and strategically before pressure sets in.

Doing this work upfront with your designer and builder goes a long way toward creating a smoother, more thoughtful, and far less stressful remodel.

Construction documents create alignment, clarity, and organization from start to finish.

Don’t wing the performance. Have a playbook that allows everyone to move in the same direction.

Remodels are the time for aspirational thinking.

What is it that you want to feel and experience in the space?

What is it that you loved about staying at that boutique hotel?

Are there things in your current bathroom that cause stress when you’re getting ready?

This is your moment to gather those thoughts and aspirations. And it’s my job to come alongside you to help ask these questions and make sure their included in the design plan for construction.

Let’s dream a little.
