Miss Kitty doesn’t have an address. She just says her home is where the pink peonies are too heavy for their stems and the welcome sign is always true. Everyone in the neighborhood knows her blue cottage. They know the sound of her front door closing, not with a slam, but with a friendly, welcoming click that says, “Come in, there’s always a pot on the stove.”

Her house is built on a foundation of little kindnesses. When you walk in, you aren’t just greeted by her; you are greeted by the silent history of a woman who never met a stranger. She believes that the small things carry the most weight. A simple monogram on a shelf, a steady hand on a saucer, and a life lived in the same rooms for forty years.

She remembers the day she first hung that welcome sign. It was a declaration to a town she barely knew, a promise that her door would always be a soft place to land. Since then, it has seen the arrivals of neighbors with heavy news and friends with even heavier laughter. It has weathered the seasons just as she has, growing more beautiful with every year it stays exactly where it belongs.

She measures her life by the peonies. She loves the way they bow their heads under their own sweetness, trusting the stems to hold them up even when the rain is heavy. She remembers the year the late frost tried to take them, and how she stayed out past midnight with old quilts, tucking each bud in as if they were her own children. They bloomed even brighter that June, a stubborn pink riot against the blue wood of her porch. To Kitty, those flowers are a reminder that beauty is worth the extra effort, and that some things are meant to be shared over the fence with anyone passing by.

The kettle is starting to sing on the stove, and the door is already unlatched for anyone who needs a place to belong.
