Did you know weathervanes have been around for thousands of years? They date back as far as the 1st century, with Andronicus placing a weathervane of Triton atop the Tower of the Winds in Athens, Greece.

But how did the rooster become the iconic symbol of weathervanes? The answer lies hundreds of years ago when, in the 9th century, Pope Nicholas decreed that all churches display the rooster on their steeples or domes as a symbol of St. Peter. This was likely due to Pope Gregory I, who, in the late 6th century, had declared that the rooster was the most suitable symbol for Christianity, stemming from the biblical passage where it was told that Peter would deny Jesus three times "before the rooster crowed."

Over the centuries, the rule was no longer enforced but roosters remained on weathervanes. What started as a law in Europe, spread as a standard throughout the world as European settlers brought them wherever they traveled, including the New World. Today, you can find weathervanes with roosters, among other things, atop buildings throughout the United States, Europe, and elsewhere.
