One of the most misunderstood things in gardening is fertilizer.
People think:
👉 more fertilizer = bigger plants
But fertilizer is mostly dissolved mineral salts carried in water. And when too many salts build up in a container, they can actually make it harder for roots to absorb water properly.
That’s why:
- leaf edges burn
- baskets collapse
- plants suddenly look stressed in summer heat
One of the easiest things you can do?
💧 Water deeply enough that water runs out of the bottom of the pot occasionally. This helps flush excess salts from the root zone before they build up.
Especially important for:
🌺 Hanging baskets
🪴 Patio containers
☀️ Hot summer annuals
Healthy roots = healthier plants.
