Not every chimney around here is solid masonry. A lot of the homes in the newer subdivisions around Carmel, Fishers, Westfield, and Zionsville use a framed chase with a masonry or stucco veneer over a factory-built system, and those leak in ways you cannot see from the ground or from inside the house. Two failures show up again and again. The first is through-wall flashing that was never installed to route water back out of the framing. The second is missing weep holes, the small drainage openings at the base of the veneer that are routinely left off during original construction. Without them, moisture that gets behind the surface has nowhere to go, and the framing quietly rots after every rain. Stainless steel is our primary relining method, but for the right chimney there is an excellent secondary option: HeatShield Cerfractory Flue Sealant. Instead of inserting a metal liner, it restores a masonry flue from the inside, applying a hybrid ceramic and refractory material to the existing clay tile. Installed with the CeCure Sleeve, it is certified to UL 1777, the same chimney liner standard stainless systems are tested to, and it is rated for all fuels: gas, oil, and wood. HeatShield tends to make the most sense when the masonry flue is fundamentally sound but has cracked mortar joints or minor surface damage, and because it resurfaces the flue in place, it preserves the original flue dimensions rather than reducing them, which matters where every bit of draft counts. It protects the surrounding masonry and your home's wood framing from the intense heat of a fire. It contains the corrosive byproducts of combustion so they vent up and out instead of seeping into the brick. And it is sized to your specific appliance so the system drafts correctly and burns efficiently. When a liner fails, all three protections weaken at the same time: heat can reach framing it was never meant to touch, carbon monoxide and moisture can work into the masonry, and a poorly sized flue causes smoking and draft problems.
