Finishing up this restoration of a 12in. (blade) J.A. Henckels (Germany) trade knife I acquired during a visit to The Smokey Mountains trip. This has the most extreme taper I've seen from the thickest to thinnest part of the tang. It is so light and nimble in hand for long term use for the butcher at the time, and going forward for the next generation because of it. Beautiful, this one. Final sharpening on the docket and coming up!

The "250". My first hand-forged knife that was born/quenched on July 4th 2026 (250th Anniversary of the United States). This is mine to enjoy and test. So proud!

The "Semiquincentennial" 🇺🇸, my first forged knife from start to finish. 2 years in the making due to our family's humbling and temporary move to an apartment-a sacrifice that left me with no shop, forging outside in the elements in upper Wisconsin, no water or electricity on site, no realistic means to heat treat or temper, and no power tools. A house came on the market that fit our needs and we moved and settled in right before the holiday. On America's 250th Anniversary (Semiquincentennial) I did the heat treat/quench/tempering and just grinded an edge this evening using my belt sander for the first time. 45° plunge line cut to center to start and then a full flat grind for slicing capabilities.

Name: The "Semiquincentennial" or "250"

Steel: 1/8 in. thick 1095 High Carbon Steel

Inspiration: Spyderco's Bow River (but with a wider blade and M/L hand-size handle

Grind : Full flat grind

Handle: Black Walnut scale

Pins: Three medium sized classic brass pins.

*I'm super proud; A true Mountain Man trade knife, and officially the sharpest knife in the house besides my cut throat razors for shaving. No cracks while forging, no auditory pings while quenching, and no visible cold shuts. I will be testing this out with potatoes, carrots, meat (raw and cooked) and carving wood (soft and hard). It's a trade knife, a modern Green River-so kitchen and light camp tasks.

When I saw this chunk of steel I instantly thought of a bench top anvil of sorts for pin peening while restoring old trade knives. A remedy for a rattle and making an old mechanical fit right and tight again. Cast steel with a hard enough surface to not blemish with a hammer and enough to have about 60% rebound with a 1 inch bearing drop at 12 inches. 5 inches across on top, 7 inches across at the base, and 3 inches tall. 24 lbs, and so smooth it's comical to try and pick it up-there's no lip or access point to pry being so flush! Great for light duty forging, peening, stamping, and a large enough hole bored all the way down (19 mm. diameter) for possible placement of forged hardy tools.

An immense volume of history and stories within these old trade knives I've been restoring-keep tabs on my Etsy Shop to purchase and have them live on for another generation of hard use. Tried and true. My favorite type of blades and steel to work with. Nothing fancy, time tested.
