A quick fabric note from the Ellsworth Community College job.

The shades in this classroom are Draper Flex Shades in S-Screen, Granite, at 1% openness. That number is how much of the fabric is open weave. A lower number means a tighter weave, which cuts more glare and sun but gives you a bit less view through the shade than a 3% or 5%.

For big windows where glare is the problem, 1% is often the right call. If you care more about the view, I’d steer you toward a more open weave.

Not sure which is right for your windows? I bring samples so you can hold them up to the light yourself.

Before and after in a classroom at Ellsworth Community College’s Dale & Marilyn Howard Center.

The original shades from when the building went up were worn out. The fabric had discolored, the chains were broken, and the clutches no longer worked, so they weren’t doing their job anymore.

I replaced them with large solar shades that cut the glare and heat but still let you see outside. We used Drapers Flex shades in S-Screen 1%, Granite

I’ve worked with Ellsworth several times over the years, and it’s always good to be back. Swipe to see the difference.

This past month reminded me why I love doing this solo — every client who trusts me with their home, every referral that comes from someone I've never even met... it adds up to something I don't take for granted. Thank you for being part of it.

Top-down/bottom-up shades confuse people until they see them in person — then it just clicks. It's really just flexibility: you decide where the coverage sits based on what that window actually needs, morning to night. Small feature, big difference in how a room feels.

Wrapping up the month with two birthdays in the house — my kids are growing up faster than I'd like. Grateful for the quiet reminder to slow down a little, even when work doesn't.

Just wrapped a den install — cordless top-down/bottom-up cellular shades. These are one of my favorites to recommend for a den or living space because you get privacy and light control at the same time: drop the top down for light without anyone seeing in or raise the bottom up for privacy while still letting light in overhead. No cords to manage either.

The showroom parking lot got seal coated last week — small thing, but it made me laugh how excited I was about black asphalt.

Guess that's small business life for you.

This layered shade-and-drapery combo has been on my mind as it cools off — the roller shade alone handles daily light, but adding drapery this time of year makes a noticeable difference keeping warmth in the room. Little changes like this add up fast on the heating bill.

Curious — what's the window in your house that drives you the most crazy? Too much morning glare? Nosy street view? Nothing fits right? Drop it below, I might just have an idea for it.

This is one of my office windows at the showroom they're short windows way up high. I installed roman shades way above the window to look like valances but if the sun is too bright or the wind too cold, I can pull the shades down!

Something new I started doing this year — every install now gets a little care and warranty card left behind, so you always know how to clean and maintain your treatments (and who to call if something's not right). Small thing, but I like knowing my clients have that in hand after I drive away.
