“Starting Over, Starting Slow.”
It’s difficult to describe how much this one means to me. This is the beginning of “Redwood Highway.” After I put in about 200 hours or so and was only to this point in the piece, I decided to give up. I was disappointed, but I scanned it in its incomplete state, printed five archival copies, and stored it all away. Six months later, with renewed energy, I took the piece back out and finished it (my proudest project!). That was back in 2022, and now, 4 years later, I brought these prints out of storage. Seeing it with that time and space in between, I really love this piece as is.
To my surprise and joy, others at my recent art walk loved it too. It was probably my most talked about piece - people thought the white spaces looked perfectly like the sun coming in through the trees. One person told me sternly not to touch the piece any further as it was already perfect (I didn’t have the heart to tell him I did indeed already finish it..)
The title comes from the song “bottom of the bottle” by Aubory Bugg - if you know me and give it a listen, I think you’ll know why it resonates with me and with this piece. I’ve started over a lot, in many aspects of life, and I’m realizing this time around that going slow is what’s making me start to feel “home.”
This is a limited edition (5 total) archival fine art print of my original colored pencil work. I’m keeping one of the prints, and I’ve already sold three, so there’s just one left! I hope it finds a happy home.
