look what came in the mail! I am ever so excited to see Facilitation Practices in Stage Management: Interpersonal Skills and Building Relationships in the Production Process by Nikki Hyde out in the world!
this book is such an important, accessible contribution to the conversation around stage management. Nikki is incredibly generous in sharing her caring approach to stage management, facilitation, and building relationships throughout the production process. I can’t wait to introduce this as a textbook in my future theatre management classes.
I also had the absolute honor of creating the chapter illustrations for the book: botanical monoprints, each made by hand with ink and foraged leaves and flowers from our shared home state of Michigan.
the concept and form of these images went through quite an evolution— beginning as linocut prints, moving into paintings, and eventually arriving at the botanic monoprints we landed on. the process of experimenting, playing, and figuring out what these images wanted to be was such a joy.
because monoprints produce only a single impression, every image is unique— a visual echo of theatre’s inherent impermanence. just as no two performances are identical, these prints capture the brief, singular moment of a living being’s contact with paper. the plants’ resilience and responsiveness to their surroundings felt like a particularly fitting parallel to the adaptive artistry of stage management.
