designer tip no.1 - pattern play
When working on a new project, my starting point is usually fabric. I LOVE fabric...especially patterned fabric. Layering different patterns adds movement and fun to a space and can give it more of that "designer" look. Where to start? Here are key patterns that I use:
1. Solid
2. Texture
3. A graphic element (stripe, plaid, check, etc)
4. Small scale print
5. Large scale print, usually a floral
6. Wild card -- something unexpected and fun
In this case, I used bold, black and white striped curtains (graphic element), black and white spotted upholstery (small scale print), floral pillow (large scale print), ivory sheep skin over back of chair (texture), red and blue persian rug (wildcard) and cowhide rug (solid). So what keeps this from looking like a crazy mess? A cohesive color scheme and a nice, neutral backdrop.
Looking to add some fun to your room? I would encourage you to add some pattern to your life.
