This is certainly true in the case of our company, Reel Barrels®. Owned and operated by Mick Steele and Jackie Steele, this company is truly unique. When the couple moved to Kodak, TN in November of 2002 they fell in love with the area, the people, the National Park; everything about East Tennessee. It truly is God’s country. After an extensive search for their perfect home in the area, Mick and J
ackie settled in Kodak and realized that they both had a passion for gardening and the outdoors. With all of the work involved in getting their yard just the way they wanted it, it only took one summer to realize that what they wanted in lawn and garden products didn’t exist. After all, you don’t get quality and great looks from a piece a plastic made in China. There is one lawn/gardening product that everyone seems to have the same frustrations with. It’s the garden hose. If you happen to find a hose that you actually like, it is almost impossible to find a hose reel or any type of hose storage that you are happy with. This was the case with the Steeles. After replacing their hose reel multiple times, Mick decided he’d had enough and was going to make “something” that was not going to tip over when you use it and was not going to break after a season of use. Thus, the idea for the first Reel Barrel® was born. Mick decided that he was going to buy a heavy duty metal hose reel and somehow hide it inside of a barrel. After all, he already had a few barrels sitting around the house for decoration, what was one more. And of course he would use a metal hose reel or the thing would just break again. After some trial and error we had our hose reel that we loved. Funny, most people that saw it loved it, too; and wanted one. But what would we call it? Ah, the Reel Barrel®! The first prototype is still in use at our house. Can you say that about the last hose reel you bought? After making several Reel Barrels® for family and friends we decided we better apply for a patent. We did not want our great idea to get stolen by someone else as is typical in some cases. We started the patent process and received our approved patent on January 20, 2008. Since then, the barrel business has grown. We now carry a full product line of re-purposed whiskey barrels. We also have accessory products that we have discovered that meet our rigid quality standards. We would like to be the source for quality home, lawn and garden products in East Tennessee and throughout the country.
