These are the moments I find out if the work paid off. I'm rarely disappointed!

Species: Hackberry
Harvested: Tippecanoe Co IN
Dry time: 6 months
Tools Used: 3/4" bowl gouge, carbide rougher, mini hollower
Finish: General finishes bowl finish

This one was TOUGH! It's been wet turned twice, once at 20% and again at 15% then dried and cursed at every time i went to finish it when it wasn't dry enough.

The void comes from it being a split in the tree. The line goes almost halfway around but I got lucky and it didn't split.

The dark shades are from minerals in the dirt that the tree had absorbed, i just learned that yesterday. 🤷‍♂️

Overall I'm over the moon about this one. I do my best to pick the most stressed parts of the logs that I get when I turn and I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job at giving you guys some of the coolest figuring you can find.

Best believe I'm gonna be trying these out TONIGHT!!

This thing is nuts. It's testing me entire skill set from tool technique to ca rebuilding, but it's gonna be worth it!

Unloaded some super nice pin oaks we picked up from a tree trimmer a few weeks ago. Still proud to say all our wood to date has been received from tree trimmers and farms. Not once have we cut down a tree just because we thought it would make something pretty!

I wanted to make sure I got this on video. I've intentionally left this as the raw video of finishing a rim with a void for not only showing the amount of time it takes but also what to do and not to do. Circular hollowers DO NOT like rims. Actually any carbide at all can cause a lot of issues when finishing rims. This is my opinion however I've done some research in past weeks and found numerous videos of people having massive failures due to that. If you don't want to watch the full video, fear not. There will be an edited short made for this!

Just fyi, this video is strictly experimental. I wanted to see how the mini carbides would interact with the rim. These are not the only tools I own and I have developed a lot of different cutting techniques.

Decided to try something new. This is turned out of an old barn beam from a barn, if I remember correctly, that was built by my great grandfather. The barn unfortunately was torn down a few years ago due to it slowly falling. We pulled out the salvagable beans and have them stored.

I wanted to keep some kind of history to it so I decided to leave the top unfinished and raw. What you're seeing is the condition of the beam prior to being cut and shaped. I had no idea what species it was until I cut it off and it ended up being cedar...which I hate. Lol. However I love this piece and the way it turned out.

The pictures aren't very good and sometimes that happens. It looks like the top is flared out past the bottom but it's even. One thing I wish I could change is I'd like to make the flare more narrow but you can't put wood back on!

Overall I'm pretty stoked because this isn't just a pitcher. It's my heritage. It symbolizes that I come from a long line of tough unbreakable men. Frontiersmen, pioneers, and farmers.

Got some free time last night to do a tiktok live and re-turn this hackberry. If you want to see my work up close and personal I highly suggest jumping in there! I answer questions, explain techniques, talk about different species, and pretty soon will take requests!

The Tippecanoe County Highway Department donated this hackberry and a few other logs and I'm pretty impressed with the character. The contrast is awesome as well. This will be a very cool piece when it gets finished and I'm excited to share it with you!
