Ever wonder how to reduce creosote buildup in your chimney? It all starts with getting the right wood. Softwoods are good for quickly starting fires, hardwoods will burn longer and hotter. Either wood you choose, be sure it is well seasoned. It is recommended to buy/split wood 6 months-1 year in advance of use to allow it to dry out and be seasoned properly. Store the wood in an area dry, ventilated, and exposed to sunlight. Keep the top protected from rain or snow to prevent moisture from building up inside the wood. Keep the wood elevated to prevent ground moisture from seeping in. Avoid storing wood in the hearth area as it may easily catch fire. Be sure to have the wood cut to fit within your fireplace/stove. Most importantly, have a certified chimney sweep out to inspect your chimney annually, either before or after the burning season, to ensure your chimney is clean and safe to use. Following these steps will keep your chimney and fireplace/stove safe and warm for years to come.
