The City of North Charleston (SC) hosts one of my favorite events as part of its annual Spring ArtsFest. Now in its 19th year, the African American Fiber Art Exhibition is curated by celebrated fiber artist and teacher Torreah “Cookie” Washington. The event attracts artists from across the country whose interpretations of each year’s theme are always intriguing. I’ve met some great women as a result of participating in this event and look forward to seeing them each year. It’s also a good place to connect with fiber art enthusiasts who appreciate culturally relevant storytelling. If you’re going to be in the Charleston area during the next month, I encourage you to visit this exhibition which will be on display at North Charleston City Hall until June 12th.
I was inspired to create a portrait of an ancient African Queen in response to this year’s “Regal Threads” theme. The name of the piece is “Purple Reign”.
