The golden poppy has been the official state flower for 120 years, the second state symbol California ever adopted. So how did it achieve such esteemed status?

Golden poppies grow wild all over California, with a natural range that stretches across the West from sea level to 6,500 feet in altitude. Native people prized the flowers for food and medicine, boiling the plants to eat them or applying them as treatments for illnesses.

The poppies’ botanical name came in 1816, when the Prussian explorer Adelbert von Chamisso docked in the San Francisco Bay and spotted the golden blossoms blanketing hillsides around the Presidio of San Francisco. He gave them the Latin name Eschscholzia californica.

When is the poppy peak? Probably the most asked question but one that never leaves people satisfied. The peak is known when you look back in time and the prior week had more flowers. Every year the poppy peak is at a different day and week AND month, depending on the temperature, soil moisture levels and it can be anywhere between March-May (with early shows of color in February). This year… who knows. It is still early in the season, next week brings some happy rain and cold temps (poppies are very tolerant of freezing temps here). Check the weather forecast before arriving as poppies close up when it is windy or cold. Looking forward to a fun poppy (and wildflower) season! XOXO

Welcome to Poppy Palooza!!

Today we begin the trek into realizing a vision that was created by the splendor of the California Poppy Fields in west Lancaster, CA.

The absolute beauty of this area draws visitors from all over the world. People plan their vacation time and flights around the timing of the bloom.

We are on a mission to enhance the local offering. Stay tuned (and check back before the next bloom) to take part in a true celebration of our local Poppy Fields and the vendors who highlight their uniqueness.
