Most of my paintings start very soft and simple.
The texture, depth, softness, and contrast happen slowly through layers.
These are the supplies I reach for over and over:
• white acrylic marker
• pencil
• neocolor crayons
• soft/oil pastels , gel sticks
• gold accents
You absolutely do NOT need every supply to start.
Even adding just one mixed media layer can completely change the feel of a painting.

I stopped painting every detail and started focusing on shapes, contrast, and mood instead. This abstract landscape started from a real reference photo, but the goal was never realism.
