Irrigation Tip: If you irrigation timer looks like it is running but the sprinklers are not actually coming on... check to see if your GFI or breaker has blown on the plug your timer is getting power from. The backup battery in your irrigation timer will keep the program running but does not have enough power to turn on the irrigation.

Plant Watch: It has been over a 100 for a few days now. Australian Bottle and African Sumac trees may start to have brown leaves. This is normal. Keep your system set for seven days a week and you will see new growth when the trees get used to the heat.

Tip of the Month: February is time for Pre-emergent. Spread according to the directions in your rock areas to inhibit w**d growth in the next few months. Save time pulling and killing w**ds later. (Home Depot, Star Nursery)

I only seem to post when there is a weather change. Sorry. But, it is supposed to freeze all week. Check that everything is covered. Backflows and temperamental plants need love. Water authority also recommends one day a week this time of year.

Now is the time to fertilize! From now until it hits 90 degrees you can fertilize. Please don't use anything over 16 16 16 or you might burn the plants and grass (apply as directed). You can also set your irrigation timer for 3 days a week.

Well, it has warmed back up. Check and see if your backflow is leaking. If it is, turn it off and call for repair. If it is in the shade check it again in about a week to make sure all is still well and that it wasn't frozen. Good Luck.

The news is calling for temperatures in the twenties until the middle of next week. Check that your backflow is covered and your temperamental plants have shelter too.
