That’s why I don’t look at a kitchen as a collection of individual cabinets. I look at how the entire space works together as a system.

Before we decide on finishes, door styles, or decorative details, I want to understand how the family cooks, stores food, prepares meals, cleans, and moves through the space.

That is where space planning and kitchen zones become so important.

Make Your Kitchen Design Decisions in the Right Order

A successful kitchen remodel is not just about making good decisions. It’s about making those decisions in the right sequence.

Start with the layout.

Then select the appliances.

Once the appliances are known, the plumbing, electrical, gas, ventilation, water lines, and even drain requirements can be properly planned.

From there, the cabinetry can be designed around the actual appliance specifications and everything that needs to happen behind the walls.

Then construction begins.

Layout → Appliances → Mechanical Systems → Cabinets → Construction

When these decisions are made in the right order, you can reduce costly changes, avoid unnecessary delays, and create a kitchen where every part of the design works together.

The most expensive kitchen mistakes should happen on paper, not during construction.

Moving walls, changing the cabinet layout, relocating appliances, or adjusting plumbing and electrical can completely transform a kitchen. But those decisions need to be tested and resolved before demolition begins.

A detailed kitchen plan allows you to identify problems, compare options, and make changes digitally, before they become expensive delays and change orders on the jobsite.

Why do kitchen finishes feel so overwhelming?

Because most homeowners start with materials before they have a clear direction.

Before we choose a single material, we decide how the room should feel.

For this kitchen, the goal was warm, calm, inviting, and elevated. That direction guided every decision.

The natural white oak hood brought warmth and connected the kitchen to the existing floors.

The handmade cement tile added texture, character, and a custom detail that gave the range wall its own identity.

The brass lighting, hardware, and plumbing fixtures acted like jewelry in the room, adding refinement and giving the kitchen the elevated finish the design needed.

I do not design kitchens by making everything match.

I design them so every decision supports the feeling we wanted to create from the beginning.

The cleanest kitchens aren’t cleaner. They’re better designed.

A clutter free kitchen doesn’t happen because someone is constantly cleaning. It starts with thoughtful design.

In this kitchen, every detail was planned to keep the island functional and visually clean. Built in hand and dish soap dispensers eliminate bottles on the countertop. A hidden paper towel holder keeps everyday essentials within reach without creating clutter. Even the outlets were placed where they’re easy to access while staying out of sight.

Every design decision started with one simple question:

What belongs on the countertop… and what deserves a better home?

When you design around the way a family actually lives, staying organized becomes easier because the kitchen is working with you, not against you.

A $3,000 design process saved this project over $20,000 and prevented a three-month delay.

The homeowners had lived with a black island for years, so they thought they wanted the entire new white kitchen.

But once I showed them the completed design in a rendering, the space felt too cold.

During our follow-up meeting, I changed the island to navy and added natural elements, including the white oak hood and shelves. That gave the kitchen the balance it needed before anything was ordered or installed.

Had that decision been made after construction, the island would have gone in the trash and multiple trades would have needed to be rescheduled.

Kitchen design does not cost you money.

The most expensive time to make a design decision is after construction begins.
