The 2026 Color of the Year is...White?

Pantone named Cloud Dancer as the 2026 Color of the Year, and at first glance, it feels almost… anticlimactic. It’s white. Or close to it. But the more you look at the palettes Pantone shared in their announcement, the more intentional it feels. At least to me it does.

Over the last several years, there’s been a strong push away from “millennial grey.” Designers and homeowners alike were ready for something new. That shift, however, swung hard in the opposite direction. Deep jewel tones, saturated colors, and bold statements everywhere. For some, it worked beautifully. For others, it felt overwhelming and visually exhausting.

Cloud Dancer feels like a recalibration.

The palettes Pantone paired with this color show subtle color. Soft blues, gentle greens, warm undertones. It’s a reminder that neutrality and color don’t have to be at odds. You can have both. You can bring color back into your space without committing to something that feels loud or permanent.

White itself is deceptively complex. If you’ve never had the experience of putting 17 different white paint samples on a wall only to watch some turn pink, some turn yellow, some turn grey, and suddenly nothing looks white anymore… just wait. It’s coming.

That’s where Cloud Dancer stands out. It presents as a true neutral white, without a strong undertone pulling it warm or cool. From a design standpoint, that neutrality creates freedom. It allows surrounding materials, finishes, and colors to take the lead rather than competing with them.

And from a practical perspective, white works with everything. Warm woods, cool stones, metals, bold textiles, soft layers. It adapts. It supports. It doesn’t ask for attention.

There’s also something kind of poetic about white being the Color of the Year. If you Google “what is white,” you’ll find that White is often defined as the presence of all colors in light, while being the absence of pigment. In that sense, choosing white as the Color of the Year reinforces the broader idea behind these palettes. This isn’t about removing color from our homes. It’s about reintroducing it thoughtfully, in a way that feels livable and flexible.

Which leads to one of life's true questions: Do you actually have to paint your walls something other than white to have a well-designed space?

I don’t think so. There is absolutely nothing wrong with white walls. You can create a curated, intentional space entirely through furniture, materials, texture, and decor. Sometimes white walls elevate a space even more. Painting a wall can add interest, but it can also distract from the design if it’s not serving a purpose.

White isn’t a lack of design. It’s a foundation.

So I’m curious what you think. Do you like having all white walls, or do you prefer to add color?

This might go against what you’ve been told (and even what parts of the design industry tend to reinforce) but it’s something I believe wholeheartedly.

You don’t have to design your home to fit a common or universally desirable mold.

Most people start with good intentions. They want to make smart choices. They want to be practical, responsible, and forward‑thinking. Somewhere along the way, though, that mindset can quietly shift into designing for a future buyer instead of the person actually living there now.

Rather than imagining a hypothetical buyer five or ten years down the road, consider your current, everyday life.

How do you start your mornings? Where do you naturally gather? What helps you unwind at the end of the day? What colors bring you a sense of calm or joy? What textures and experiences make you feel comfortable and at ease?

Here’s a reminder worth grappling with: your home is your home. Whether you live there for five years or thirty, you are the one who is currently experiencing it every single day.

Your home holds the small, ordinary moments that make up real life; quiet mornings, busy evenings, celebrations, and rest. It should support the way you live now, not just the way it might someday be marketed to someone else.

Letting Go of the Pressure to Please Everyone

There’s a long‑standing belief that the safest design choice is neutrality — that if a home appeals to everyone, it’s the smartest path forward.

In reality, most buyers begin imagining changes the moment they walk through the door. They picture their own furniture, their own colors, their own routines.

So why not allow yourself to imagine you living there first?

A home doesn’t have to be blank to appeal to a wide range of people. It simply needs to be well designed — thoughtful, functional, and intentional.

When you stop designing for resale and start designing for living, your home becomes more than a checklist of spaces to to show on a listing someday. It becomes a place that reflects who you are and supports how you live.

And when the time eventually comes to move on, it can be someone else’s turn to walk in and imagine how they’ll make it their own. Just as you once did.

If you’re ready to turn your house into a home and stop planning around someone else’s taste, I’d love to help you get started. Reach out today to schedule a free consultation.

Espresso, chocolate, walnut, mahogany… different names, same image — a classic dark brown natural wood cabinet style that was incredibly popular in the early 2000s, often paired with a busy (but beautiful) granite countertop.

And here’s the thing: you don’t have to rip out your entire kitchen to get a fresh, modern look.

Those rich wood tones and one-of-a-kind granite slabs have character, warmth, and depth that can’t be replicated. Instead of starting from scratch, consider updating the elements around them. Fresh paint, a lighter or more refined backsplash, or even a bold wallpaper moment can instantly change the feel of the space.

To really elevate the design, tie the dark wood into the rest of your home — think a dramatic dining table, updated lighting, or modern hardware that complements the richness of the cabinetry. These intentional updates help bridge the gap between old and new, transforming an early-2000s kitchen into a space that feels current, layered, and designed.

Smart design is about working with what you have and making thoughtful choices that bring it into a new era — without unnecessary demolition. If you’re planning a kitchen refresh this year and want help modernizing your space while keeping what makes it special, I’d love to help.

Why work with an Interior Designer?

Designing a home comes with a LOT of decisions. Big ones. Small ones. A thousand tiny ones that somehow all matter. My job is to take that weight off your shoulders and turn the process into something that actually feels enjoyable.

I put my clients first. Always.
Your home. Your time. Your money.
I treat all three with care and intention, and I see it as my responsibility to be a good steward of them.

Working with a designer means:
• You save time (no endless scrolling or second-guessing)
• You avoid costly mistakes
• You get a clear plan instead of overwhelm
• You stay on budget with guidance and priorities
• You end up with a cohesive, thoughtful space that truly feels like you.

You still get the final say. This is your home. I’m just here to guide, advocate, problem-solve, and make the journey smoother from start to finish.

Good design isn’t about being fancy. It’s about creating a home that supports your life—and enjoying the process along the way.

New year, new projects — and let’s talk about what’s on everyone’s mind lately...

Is honey / golden oak coming back?!
I know what you’re thinking… weren’t those so early 2000s just last week? But here’s the truth: natural wood cabinets are making a major comeback as we move out of the “gray-ify everything” era and back into warmth, character, and timeless materials.

Before you decide to paint over your beautiful natural wood cabinets, consider this: sometimes the cabinets aren’t the problem — the surrounding finishes are. By updating elements like countertops, backsplash, hardware, lighting, or wall color, you can completely transform the look and bring your kitchen into a new 2026 era of design.

Whether you lean more neutral and timeless or bold and expressive, there are endless ways to refresh a kitchen while honoring the natural wood that’s already there. Thoughtful design choices can make older-style cabinets feel intentional, elevated, and current — without starting from scratch.

This is the kind of design strategy I love helping clients navigate. If you’re planning a kitchen update this year and want guidance on what to keep, what to change, and how to make it all work together, I’d love to help.
