Whenever I take the time to wander around Old Town Warrenton in the early hours, I find something that seems to scream “take my picture.” Well, the clocktower is all clean now, and the old Oak tree taken away, and on this particular morning the old courthouse seemed ready for the photo shoot.

I find I’m spending less time making images of grand vistas. Instead, I find the most interesting things right at my feet, or at most a few steps away.

I spied this little sprig of water grass in the stream about 30 ft away. I took off my shoes, waded in, and just sat and watched the gentle flow of water move over the rocks and around the sprig. She seemed to be favoring the low flows right now, taking on a relaxed attitude, perhaps dreading the next big rain and the fight she’d almost certainly have just to hold on.

You can visit her yourself here —> https://gallery.jrileystewart.com/close-encounters-collection/#gallery/f805c3e8b257bcca3dbb0c91e6b6f338/1173

Taking notes: Compositionally, I wanted the sprig to appear in control of the setting, so I placed it very high in the frame. I used the lines created by the seam between the larger rocks (from the lower right) and the reflections of the smaller rocks (from the lower left) to guide attention back to the sprig. I emphasized the light appearing on the sprig to further draw attention to its delicate textures and gentle curves. Made with my 4x5 camera on TMY400 film.

Whew. Done. Installed several large-scale B&W photographs of mine today at the new clubhouse in Birchwood at Brambleton. Interior designs by Lita Dirks & Co., Denver; nice bunch of folks. All but one of the photographs were from my "Small Town Virginia" collection. Really pleased how they look on the walls. (I need to go back when everything is finished to take pics.)

Music at the Pond

Sharing "Music at the Pond" - To see the full composition, click the image or the link below (FB uses a haphazard cropping scheme don't ya know).

I like visiting big waters, but one of my favorite things to do in Summertime is to walk around farm ponds, especially on still days. At this pond, Martin houses were placed on long poles and the birds were in frenzy chasing flying insects, which is a very vocal exercise. While I stood listening to the birds, I looked down at the water and realized they must have been following the score created by the reflected houses themselves. Nature is funny sometimes.
Enjoy!

Quiet Evening on Lake Moomaw

At this time of year, the Appalachians can get very busy and crowded. But if you wait for it, there comes a time each day when everyone seems to disappear, and you're left with pure nature.
Sit and relax. Enjoy it --> https://gallery.jrileystewart.com/water/#gallery/408b2b9cde5d907ab1cf4a28e0114615/1221

"Quiet Evening on Lake Moomaw" is from my Living Waters Collection. If interested, https://gallery.jrileystewart.com/water/. Enjoy!

The quiet on this mountain lake in the Appalachian Mountains, at this particular moment in time, was interrupted only by the light.

"Fast Waters" -
Even though I can't share with you the roar of the water, the smell of the ozone or pine forest, or even the feel of the weathered stones, I can share this scene's sense of motion and its story.

It was the feeling of continuous, rapid motion that drove me to create this image as I stood on the bank of the Linville River in NC. You can see the obvious motion of the water, sure, but I found it just as interesting to consider the story that this motion has been playing out for hundreds? thousands? of years. Such as how the lines in the rock on the far bank seemed to mimic the lines of the flowing water, and how the boulders have been beaten down and made smooth through the eons, yet still able to permit growth of the most tenacious seedlings.

Mountain Grass Skyline Drive

Something about just sitting around watching the grass grow. At this time of year when the days hit the 90s in the valleys, I'm eager to get up on the Blue Ridge for cooler temps. At day break on one such visit, I noticed how the rising sun began reflecting off the flowers of native grasses, singling them out for attention, and couldn't resist taking a picture to remind me of the experience.

Like a fly to honey, I'm drawn to living waters. Living waters are always moving, always going somewhere. And it's that sense of movement that intrigues me and guides how I depict light reflecting off living waters.

I always look forward to the emergence of pond lillies this time of year on the Virginia piedmont. They look so delicate and fragile, and when the sun hits them just right, they appear as tiny dancers on the surface of the pond.

Dappled Shadows on the Storefront at Harpers Ferry

When I see settings like this, I always wonder about the people who might have spent their entire lives behind that curtain... behind that door..trodding up those stairs. I'm glad we have such historically preserved sites to enjoy today.
Visit the image in my gallery by clicking the photo... there's much more to see than FB is showing.

It was the bright curtain in the window that caught my attention in this scene in Harpers Ferry. Ulimately, I discovered so much more.

I had to stand in the doorway with my view camera to catch this. Lucky it was a slow day in the National Historical Park.

I found this old shell on Edisto Island, SC. I wanted to remember how full of character it was, and how compliant it was to the ebb and flow of nature.

I wondered how many times this old sea shell had been forced to relocate due to the moods of the tide.

March Snow at Waterford Mill

Here in northern Virginia we often get our heaviest snowfalls in March. They're usually the wet, heavy snows that stick to everything. Then, just as suddenly as they arrive, the warm winds take them away. And before we know it, this young dogwood tree will be covered in blossoms. My favorite time of year.

A small dogwood tree waits the coming of spring on the Virginia Piedmont.

Bifurcations

As we edge into Spring, this tree will put on its summer face. Until then, I'll just enjoy its millions of bifurcations. Count them yourself by visiting the link.
Hint: FB cropped the image; hit the link to see full frame, which includes a nice reflection of the tree.
