I respect my clients’ individuality and honor it in the design process. For me, a well-designed home is an expression of who lives there, never of the designer. I’m excited about this fireplace makeover project for my art nouveau loving clients! The peacock feather tile is the accent and picture on the right the inspiration. My challenge is how to make the design work (And fabulous) so it will fit over the existing brick. Oh, and did I mention adding Anaglypta paintable wallcovering to the ceiling? Similar to the look of pressed tin but more refined, easier to install and better acoustics.

Out with the old, in with the new! Replacing the old floor and carpeting on the main level so that everything is the same material. Their home will feel unified, look larger and more upscale when it’s finished.
My wonderful clients and I have been working on this project for several years now. Mainly because sometimes figuring out what you truly like and then planning a project takes time. That, and taking into account all the busyness of everyday life - jobs, kids, illness, vacations. Heading down the home stretch 👍🏼 Quartz countertop, island lighting, window treatments and a few select furniture pieces up next.

AND did you know that when using quartz, which is manmade, there can still be a variation from slab to slab? It’s best to pick it out at your suppliers and then have it shipped to your fabricator. Your fabricator should let you tape out the exact section you want to use.

This quote struck me today “As you practice building a home within yourself, you become more beautiful.” The more comfortable you are with yourself, the more beautiful you become. The inside out approach to beauty.

I’m more the outside in. My mission is to create beautiful homes for my clients so they feel more comfortable and at home. The Reverse zen approach to decorating maybe 😉

A day in the life of a designer...
yesterday I went to a clients home to check on the contractors progress, figure out the exact layout of the new backsplash tile, check out the new LED recessed lighting on dimmers of course, finalize the dimensions for undercabinet LED tape lighting, pick up the seat cushion of a vintage settee which will now be at a dining table and therefore needs a firmer insert and then
I went to my workroom to deliver the said settee cushion, opened up the cushion insert and discovered it was actually springs wrapped in down fill, discussed the most affordable options to replace it, checked out fabric sample books for recovering a different clients antique rocker, fabric to substitute a way backordered window treatment fabric, and fabric for yet another clients ,window treatments, looked at the mockup of a slipcover for dining room chairs, selected the correct accent button size,
after that I went to a fabric store for several other projects...
and at the end of the day, it's a lot of work actually and I totally love my job...

True story
A big design challenge as a designer can be client EXPECTATIONS, and realizing they may not even be clear what a design consultation is. I recently had a consultation where I spent many hours at a clients home, going from room to room, listening hard to what she said she wanted her home to feel like. I took that into account, her budget and as well as what the spaces and architecture in her home called for. I gave her my creative ideas and practical solutions. (based on an education and decades of practicing my craft) An outline of a design plan to start the project in the right direction. Often clients will feel better after having put a lot of energy into trying to figure it out themselves. They take notes and smile. 🙂
Not this time. After the fact, I was informed how disappointed she was that she did not get anything for her money (which I refunded btw) She expected that I would bring PierOne type accessories and décor to her home. :(

Most design jobs start with a challenge - the space doesn’t work, wrong sized furniture, or even mistakes made by a “designer” who didn’t know what they were doing or tried to impose their taste on the client. My job often is fixing mistakes and finding solutions. 👍🏼
In this case, my design challenge was to make the clients mostly pink, silk oriental rug work in the room without creating a pink room.
Solution was to reupholster the sofa in a classic white, bring in a neutral drapes that frame the view of the vineyard, add a glass cocktail table still lets you see the rug, introduce other patterned fabrics that compliment not compete - all in a cheery yellow painted room.

Things are just getting more and more weird in my profession. 😱 A “designer” now can be just about anyone - from the furniture sales persons offering “free” design services (they’re paid by commission), to a neighbor who had a business card printed up offering “affordable design services.” Despite not having any education or experience she declared herself as one. (yes that actually happened)
And unfortunately, there’s a credibility that comes with the title, often not deserved or appropriate. Sadly its only after people spend money without getting any value do they realize it. And eventually they find their way to me . 👍🏼😄

Not every picture tells the whole story, like what went into the design decisions for this living room. Regardless of style or budget, each project starts as a specific space - big room, small room, awkward space. That makes all the difference.
In this case, one long wall is what anchors the open concept plan after an addition eliminated the rest. (See BEFORE picture)
To anchor the space, a dark blue accent wall creates a backdrop for a transitional sofa and matching tables topped with blue and white lamps. Dads corner has a reading chair, ample bookshelves, treasured family mirror and proximity to a bar cabinet.

I love custom work—and this horseshoe crab is no exception. Custom commissions offer unique challenges and encourage me to seek inspiration from ideas I never would have come up with on my own. This horseshoe crab will eventually join a whole Chesapeake scene on a house exterior.

Project in the works: creating a PLAN to pull together a modern look in a new home with 10’ ceilings. My client wants to use some of her existing furniture which is great. She needs help making the her gray cabinets and blue subway tile work in the open concept space. And mostly, she needs a vision for what her home will look like when it’s done - that’s where I come in. 💜
After our initial consultation where I find out what her goals for her home are, I made recommendations for drapes, paint color, striking chandeliers, storage cabinets, art and stone to upgrade the fireplace, as well as furniture layout and accessorizing. I’m especially excited about using a family heirloom oriental screen as the focal point of the foyer. (A house should always be personal) I always give my clients several great choices - that helps them figure out what their style really is. Only after we’ve made ALL the design decisions and have a complete DESIGN PLAN, do we move forward with spending any money. There’s nothing wrong with implementing your design project over time, as long as you have a plan in place and know where you’re going.

This is a stencil company out of the U.K. I I often use! Terrific alternative to wallcovering!

I never tire of packaging this stencil and imagining what the customer might achieve with it. It's CH32 Willow Pattern, a large repeating stencil based on the popular 18th century designs for porcelain and ceramics. In the USA the pattern is more commonly known as Blue Willow. Traditionally, it features two shades of blue on a white background. ...it looks fab in any colour! #chinoiseriestencil #interiorinspiration #stencillibrary #bluewillow #willowpattern #willowpatternwall #stencil #mailorderstencils #blueandwhite http://bit.ly/2UrL0jD

Todays color lesson: PINK!
Not just for little girls rooms anymore, pink is all grown up. The more confident sister of blush, it works in both modern as well as traditional rooms. As a paint color, pink is fresh, soothing and warm. And as an accent color, it creates a fun and unexpected visual pop. Pillows, rugs, art and even just fresh flowers are all easy ways to add pink to your home. (That last layer of accessories is where your eyes goes when you enter a room.)
Help finding the right shade of pink is included in a design consultation.
And thanks for my assistant Sophie for posing on a lovely Persian area rug as well as on the Moroccan flat weave.

Blessed are the contractors who know what they’re doing, do it well and have patience! Undoing every single little package of capiz shells took much longer than hanging the actual fixture. They made a magical sound like wind chimes. Light fixtures are like a rooms piece of jewelry. 💕

Let’s talk paint colors: 8 do’s and don’ts!

1) DO always pick out your paint color in the actual room where it will go!
2) DON’T pick out your paint color in a store, or worse, online or in a friends house! Lighting makes a HUGE difference! A color may even look perfect in one room of your house and awful in another.
3) DO know that the color on those little paint chips will looker darker on the wall if it’s a light color, and lighter if it’s a dark one. 😳 confusing, no?
4) DO think about how you want your room to feel because the color of your walls makes a huge impact! Soothing = a green, teal or soft blue. Energized = a rich color like red. Happy = a warm tone. And yes, I give you permission to move past the gray trend.
5) DO consider an accent wall! It’s a great focal point and easy to change if you get tired of that color. (And no, they’re not dated)
6) DO make sure that the brand you selected is what the painter is actually using. If you selected a Benjamin Moore color and his buckets say Home Depo it may not be the exact same color. (I’ve seen it done)
7) DON’T panic if the color doesn’t look the same as the sample when it’s going on - it needs 2 coats and to dry. (I’ve had a few panicked client calls😉)
8 ) DO consider a professional color consultation. Money well spent, especially given the cost of the labor. We include them in our design consultations.

A question I often get is how do I work. Great question, given there's so much confusion these days. And no wonder - there are stagers, decorators, designers, "free" design services. Yes, there is some overlap but no, they do not all provide the same services or value. As a designer, I meet with my clients at their home to find out what they like and what they need and often, what's not working. I then look at the spaces to figure out what also makes sense. For example, a small room needs a completely different plan than a large one. We talk about how long they plan to live in their home and if resale is important. We discuss budget. (and btw most people have a general, not specific idea of what they want to spend) At that point, I create a design concept and plan - the "this is what we need to do and here's why." It may include furniture layout and selections, lighting, accessories, window treatments, material recommendation like tiles or flooring, art, window treatments and more. Those recommendations aren't based on the latest trend or selling in order to get a commission, but rather that clients specific style and needs. From there, we decide the best way to implement the plan. We’ve figured out where we want to go - the destination, if you will. Now we need the roadmap. 👍🏼

A few pointers! 😉
03/22/2019

A few pointers! 😉

10 Decorating lessons:

1) Decorating is fun! Not easy, but fun.
2) Decorating can be messy. Like life 😳
3) You get what you pay for, mostly. Not always. (But still Invest in quality)
4) Having the right people is key.
5) Having a design plan is just as important as #4. So the right people know what the plan is.
6) Did I mention a design plan?
7) Think Rome. Wasn’t built in a day. Your project also won’t be built in a day. Patience.
8)Problems, yip there will be problems. (See #2) Whats important is that your right people will solve them!
9) Budget. Things cost $. Know what they cost before you set a budget, or be flexible. And remember #3.
10) Honor yourself. By that I mean don’t feel as if your home should be like every else’s. Be true to yourself and not the latest trends.

And at the end of the day, its all worth it! The mess, problems, time and money. You get to live in a place that’s yours and yours alone and makes that you happy! What could be better? 💕
