We encourage everyone to participate in today’s economic boycott! Small businesses are truly the backbone of our economy and too many have forgotten that. Corporations would put all of our community-owned shops out of business if it were up to them. We’re making real efforts to divest from them (cancelling our Amazon subscription was the first important step!) and shop local/source from independently owned businesses instead.

If you’d like to choose to support our small business we have some upcoming events to share. Save the date for gallery opening/International Women’s Day celebration! We’ll have refreshments from local executive pastry chef and actions you can take to observe IWD in a meaningful way.

Vanessa here with a quick explanation of why I keep inviting y’all to come learn about women from the world of art history!

This Women’s History Month let’s claim some justice for these women by putting their stories back into the narrative… and getting crafty while we do it! Photos of and inspired by their work will be available so we can paint and collage wooden keepsake boxes that will always remind you of how creative, brave, and badass these ladies were. DM us with any questions!

Full-circle moment! is one of the first downtown Leesburg shops we ever fell in love with. It’s been amazing shopping with them from almost the very beginning and watching them outgrow spaces and go from a little start-up to a flourishing pillar of the local community. We’re fortunate that owner Leah has become a friend, in fact one of our first moves as we considered opening CRAFT was to grab lunch with her and pick her brain for all the small business owner advice.

And now we’re collaborating with them to bring a new book club to downtown… or, a play reading club rather! What will make this club different from other book clubs you may have participated in before?…

Plays are meant to be HEARD and watched onstage. So rather than reading a script and then coming together to discuss it we’ll meet up the third Thursday of every month (March-August to start) in Craft to LISTEN to a play reading. Josh, myself, and some guest actor friends (and maybe you, do you want to read? You’ll get to keep a copy of the script!) will read roles and together we’ll delve deeper into this art form. Then after six readings we’ll take a field trip into DC to see a fully-produced play together!

The $160 class fee covers the scripts we’ll need to get for readers (when available Birchtree will have extras in-stock for you to purchase if you love them!), and the tickets for that theatre trip at the end. Listen to the video I included if you’d like to learn more about the first three plays I’ve selected for us to read. We hope you’ll join us!

Lots of opportunities to get creative in a variety of ways coming to the shop over the next month (and change). Which strikes your fancy?

🪡 Some subversive cross stitch slogans can be pretty spicy, we’re keeping it PG-rated with an original pattern by Alexandra McKay that reads “You Do You”. A great way to learn this craft and create a fun addition to your home decor!

🪘We’re adding a second Music with Mowgli class to accomodate littler ones as well! March 1 for the 6-12 year olds, one week later for the 2-6 crowd. Come drum and play!

👩🏼‍🎨 Plus two opportunities to celebrate Women’s History Month by learning about amazing, trailblazing female artists of history and their masterpieces! (While painting and decoupaging a wooden box to keep.)

🎓 Homeschooled CRAFTers Club! Join us for this five-session series where we’ll be learning about art movements from history, comparing and contrasting two artists from each period, and trying our own hand at emulating their style!

✍️ Are you looking for some calm in your mind? Just want to tune the world out for a while? Then meditative doodling with might be for you!

🎭 Or maybe you’d love to delve deeper into the theatrical arts? Then join us for an upcoming 6-month play reading club! We’re partnering with for this “book club” but this is a medium meant to be seen and heard, not read - so join us for one play reading a month from March-August and then we’ll go see a show in DC together! Want to read a role? Email or DM us and we’ll get you a script!

🎨 Parents’ Night Out: Paint Night, let the kids make a mess while you have the evening off - we’ll take care of clean up!

✌️ The last Friday of every month starting in March we’re saving space for Teen Night so they can come in and have their own time in the shop! Save your teen’s spot for $5, arts/crafts project pricing varies (most in the $15-30 range)

🌱 Another tea blend workshop on the books for the spring season with returning by popular demand. So excited to create a new blend to nourish us through the next season!

Have you ever tried candle painting? We tested the viral method of using colored tea lights to paint with wax on taper candles, but found it pretty challenging. The wax started to harden really quickly and doesn’t go on the same way as brushstrokes, more like dots. So we tested acrylic paint instead, it works and the candles still burn just fine!

Tickets up on our website to join us for candle painting on February 15th! We slowed down on workshops this Jan/Feb to have more space for winter birthday parties, and more time to plan fun things for this spring… so, more events will be coming to the site soon for March/April - keep your eyes peeled 👁️👄👁️

We’re still working on building back our inventory after the holidays, a lot of the companies we order from are very small businesses so we’re being patient with them while they get their shipping in order. A few things to share though - we’re got adorable mini-Valentines (with envelopes and stickers). Cute for class parties - or giving to your girlfriends!

And we’re got more stitch kits in from - these are a great intro to sewing project and create some very adorable mini felt stuffies with a whole lot of personality! For example, meet Patina the Messy Tea Cup. From the vendor’s site:

Had so much fun today screen printing with folks at a workshop session for the Loudoun County Comprehensive Arts Plan! It was great to hear more about the surveys and listening sessions that the county has been hosting with and what they’ve heard the community wants to see for the future of arts in Loudoun. We certainly have lots of opinions about how to support artists and community art spaces and we loved getting to share and be heard. Pairing these workshops with an activity was a great idea, we hope everyone loves how their totes turned out! More beginner-level as well as advanced screen printing kits are available in the shop.

The last in-person workshop for the Comprehensive Arts Plan is tomorrow (January 15) from 5:30-7pm at the Dulles South Senior Center in South Riding and will feature a dance performance by Mudra Arts. Hope you’ve enjoyed the snow days… we’re back open tomorrow! If you’re going stir-crazy at home come on in for crafting time and leave the mess here for us to deal with! We just got these neat mini-screen printing kits in if you’d like something new to try out. Bring a t-shirt from home to print your designs on, or we have tote bags in the shop you can use for some practical and fun printing exploration. $17 for the kit on its own, $20 for a kit + tote bag bundle.
