🍋 Lisbon Lemon — Care Card

Our Lisbon lemon trees live outdoors from late spring through early fall, then come inside for winter. A few things that keep them happy:

☀️ Light — 6–8 hours of direct sun; brightest south-facing window indoors (a grow light helps on short days)

💧 Water — soak only when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry; ease off in winter

🪴 Soil — well-draining citrus mix in a pot with drainage holes

🌡️ Cold — freezing temps can kill citrus, so bring yours in before the first frost (average Oct 21 around here)

🌿 Feed — citrus fertilizer through the growing season; rest in winter

🌱 Behind the scenes: potting up lemon trees

These started in small plastic cups. The roots were filling the cup, so they’re moving into half-gallon pots with our fresh custom mix. More room now means a stronger plant to bring inside for winter.

A few things we look for before potting up:
• Healthy roots, not mushy or black
• A sturdy stem and a few true leaves
• A pot big enough that the roots aren’t circling right away

These are Lisbon lemons, $5 each. Lemons need to come inside before frost, so these are a windowsill or sunroom plant through winter.

If you have a sunny path, bare patches between pavers, or a dry slope, creeping thyme is worth a look. It stays just a few inches tall, spreads into a soft mat, and smells like herbs when you walk on it. Save this for spring planning, or plant now while the soil is still warm.

Fall is one of the best times to plant a tree in our region.

We’ve been sending Silver Maples and Eastern Redbuds out for local pickup, and the question we get most is: can I still plant this, or should it sit in the pot until spring?

The best advice we can give is:

1. Dig a hole wider than deep. The hole should be about twice as wide as the pot, and no deeper than the root ball. Planting too deep is how a healthy tree slowly fails.

2. Check the roots before it goes in. Slide it out of the pot. Tease apart any roots circling the bottom so they grow out, not around.

3. Set the flare at ground level. The spot where the trunk widens should sit even with the soil — not buried.

4. Backfill with the dirt you dug out. Don’t pack in a bag of “magic mix” that stays soggy. Water well as you fill so there aren’t air pockets.

5. Mulch like a donut, not a volcano. A couple inches out around the drip line. Keep mulch off the trunk.

6. Water once a week if we don’t get rain. Fall sun still dries a new tree out, especially in a windy yard.
