🍂 IS IT TIME TO CLOSE YOUR POOL? 🏊‍♀️

One of the biggest questions we get this time of year is: “When should I close my pool?”

🌡️ Follow the 65° Guideline!

Ideally, you want to wait until the outside temperatures are consistently below 65°F for about a week before closing your pool.

Why wait? 👇

Closing your pool too early while temperatures are still warm can create the perfect environment for algae to grow underneath your winter cover. 🦠😬 That can mean a much greener—and more expensive—surprise when you open in the spring!

📅 Many pools in our area are closed between mid-September and early October, but don’t base it entirely on the calendar. Temperature matters more than the date!

❄️ And remember—proper winterization is extremely important. Water needs to be properly removed from your equipment and plumbing lines to help prevent costly freeze damage over the winter.

A little patience and proper winterization now can make your spring opening MUCH easier! 💦☀️

☀️ EXTREME HEAT = EXTRA POOL CARE! 💦

When it’s extra hot outside, your chlorine takes a beating! High temperatures and strong sunlight cause chlorine to burn off faster, while algae can grow quicker. 🦠

If you’re not adjusting your pool-care routine during a heat wave, you may find yourself fighting cloudy or green water.

Here are 3 things to check to keep your chlorine in fighting shape: 👇

1️⃣ Run Your Pump a Little Longer
On the hottest days, consider adding an extra hour or two of circulation. Moving water helps distribute your chemicals evenly and keeps your pool properly filtered.

If you have a variable-speed pump, longer periods of lower-speed circulation can be especially helpful during extreme heat.

2️⃣ Check Your Stabilizer (CYA)
Cyanuric acid (CYA), also called stabilizer or conditioner, helps protect your chlorine from being destroyed by the sun. ☀️

Without enough stabilizer, your chlorine can disappear VERY quickly on a bright, hot day.

For most traditional chlorine pools, we generally like to see CYA around 30–50 ppm. Saltwater pools may benefit from a somewhat higher level around 50-80 depending on the system.

⚠️ More isn’t always better! Too much CYA can make chlorine less effective, so test before adding stabilizer.

3️⃣ Shock in the Evening 🌙
If your pool needs shocked, evening is the best time to do it. Adding shock after the sun goes down gives the chlorine time to work without immediately being broken down by UV rays.

During stretches of extreme heat and heavy swimming, keep an extra-close eye on your chlorine level and water clarity. Test more frequently and shock as needed rather than waiting until the water starts turning cloudy or green.

🔥 HOT WEATHER POOL CHECK:
💦 Circulation
☀️ Stabilizer (CYA)
🧪 Chlorine
🌙 Shock when needed

A little extra attention during a heat wave can save you from a green pool later!

⚠️ POOL TIP: Don’t Put Chlorine Tablets or Shock in Your Skimmer! ⚠️

Did you know putting chlorine tablets or shock directly in your skimmer can potentially cause problems — especially in a vinyl liner pool?

🚫 Chlorine tablets are very concentrated and acidic. When tablets sit in the skimmer, especially while the pump is OFF, highly concentrated chlorinated water can sit in the skimmer and plumbing.

🚫 The same goes for shock! Never pour concentrated pool shock directly into the skimmer. Sending a strong dose of chlorine straight through your circulation system can expose your pump, filter, heater, plumbing, and other equipment to extremely high chlorine levels.

Over time, this can:
💧 Damage or wrinkle or even bleach the vinyl liner around the skimmer
⚙️ Be hard on pump seals and pool equipment
🔥 Damage heaters and heat exchangers
🧪 Expose plumbing and equipment to extremely concentrated chlorine

✅ Better options: Use a properly installed chlorinator or floating dispenser for tablets. When shocking your pool, always follow the product label directions for your specific shock and pool type.

Never mix different pool chemicals together or add different chemicals to the skimmer at the same time.

A little change in how you chlorinate your pool can help protect your liner AND your equipment!

🌧️ All This Rain? Don’t Forget to Check Your Pool’s Water Level! 🌧️

With the recent heavy rainfall, now is a great time to take a few minutes to check your pool.

💧 If your water level gets too high, it can:
• Reduce your skimmer’s ability to remove debris.
• Wash contaminants into your pool.
• Increase the risk of overflowing, which can wash away landscaping or cause erosion around the pool.
• In some cases, put unnecessary stress on your safety cover or equipment.

✅ If the water is above the middle of the skimmer opening, it’s a good idea to lower it back to the proper operating level.

While you’re at it:
🍃 Empty your skimmer and pump baskets.
🧼 Check and clean your filter if needed.
🧪 Test your water chemistry—heavy rain can dilute your chlorine sanitizer and throw off your balance.

A few minutes of maintenance now can help prevent bigger problems later.

If you have any questions, we’re always happy to help!

☀️ Mid-Summer Pool Reminder! 💦

Your pool has been working hard all season—and so has your filter! If your water isn’t as clear as it should be or your pressure gauge is reading high it your return jet is just trickling out, it may be time for a good filter cleaning.

🔹 Sand Filters: Backwash when the pressure is 8–10 PSI above your clean starting pressure.
🔹 Cartridge Filters: Remove and thoroughly hose off the cartridge. If it’s heavily soiled, use a filter cleaner for a deep clean.
🔹 DE Filters: Backwash and recharge with fresh DE powder, or perform a complete teardown and use a filter cleaner for a deep clean.

A clean filter means:
✅ Better water circulation
✅ Crystal-clear water
✅ Improved sanitizer efficiency
✅ Less strain on your pump
✅ Lower energy costs

Don’t wait until your pool turns cloudy—give your filter the attention it deserves and enjoy the rest of the summer with sparkling water! 🌊

Need filter cleaner, DE powder, replacement cartridges, or have questions about your system? Stop by—we’re here to help keep your pool in top shape all season long!
