Berenike is 4 now! She’s living the doggie dream, taking care of baby goats and protecting the herd. We live in country with big predators and she does an amazing job keeping them away. From ravens to bears to mountain lions, she makes it known that goat kids will not be an easy meal with her on guard!

Her favorite part of the day is getting to drink some goat milk after milking time.

One of my favorite doe kids born last year from Uno and Achilles. If we get another doe like her born this year we’re going to keep her!

Tips to raise capable farm kids:

1. Include them in what you’re doing. Even if it would be easier to do it by yourself, bring a kid along! It’s special time together.

2. Give them responsibilities. Hold the bucket, collect the eggs, feed the dog. Once they can walk, then can start to take an active part and feel a sense of responsibility and accomplishment.

3. Let them name an animal. This will make caring for “their” animal more special if they get to give it a name.

4. Let them play. As long as it’s safe, make farm time fun time by giving them time to play on the hay bales or run through the field. These are memories that will last a lifetime.
