“Hematohidrosis” is an incredibly rare condition that can occur under extreme stress or fear—so intense that blood vessels rupture, causing a person to appear as though they are sweating blood, often from the face.
Sound familiar?
In the Garden of Gethsemane, as Jesus faced betrayal, suffering, and the cross, we are given a glimpse into the depth of His anguish in Luke 22:44:
“And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly; and His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.”
This should stop us in our tracks.
It’s easy to think of Gethsemane and the crucifixion as distant moments in history—something that happened long ago. But this wasn’t just history. It was personal. It was for us, and it still matters today.
He was overwhelmed. He prayed. He even asked if there was another way. Scripture tells us He was “sorrowful to the point of death” (Matthew 26:38).
And then came Good Friday—the day that suffering reached its peak.
The day He was beaten, mocked, nailed to a cross, and ultimately gave His life.
What began in the garden, in anguish and surrender, led to the cross—where He didn’t just sweat blood… He shed it.
We’ve heard this story before—maybe even countless times. But this Easter, don’t let its familiarity dull its power.
Pause. Really see it.
What He did wasn’t ordinary.
It was saving.
He saved us.
The blood He sweat in the garden was only the beginning—the beginning of the sacrifice He would fully pour out on the cross for our redemption.
Don’t let this ever become routine or casual. Never forget—He did this because He loves us, because He chose us, because He deemed us worth it.
“Since we have now been justified by His blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through Him!”
Romans 5:9
