Cleaning may be one of the best things I do for my marriage all week. It may sound weird, but I seriously believe that.
Every Friday (or my hubby's "work schedule" Friday as he works odd days), I spend a good chunk of my day cleaning the house. Catching up on the laundry that has piled up throughout the week, cleaning the bathrooms, decluttering, washing sheets, etc.
As busy as I am, sometimes this isn't fully attainable, so I just focus on his items. His clothes, his uniforms, a quick clean-out of his car, tidying his man-cave.
This may sound trad-wifey, but I don't even care. What I am creating for my husband each of his Fridays is a chance to wind down from his stressful work week.
He works so extremely hard all week to provide for our family, and I want him to feel that the second he walks through that door. A clean home, clothes ready to go, his favorite space clean, calm and inviting... it's my way of saying "I see you, I've got you, and thank you."
Some weeks it's a full deep clean. Some weeks it's just his stuff and a candle lit before he pulls in the driveway. Either way, the goal is the same: give him a soft place to land.
Unpopular opinion: keeping a clean home for the people you love isn't oppression, it's a love language. Taking care of my husband and our home doesn't make me small. It makes our marriage feel like a team.
That said, cleaning feels different when you're not scrubbing with a bunch of chemicals you can't pronounce. I do my Friday reset with our non-toxic cleaning products and our bamboo cleaning accessories, so I'm not breathing in anything harsh while I'm making our home feel good for the people I love. Clean home, clean ingredients, clean conscience.
So if you're out here doing the same thing every Friday (or whatever day is your version of Friday), just know you're not alone, and it matters more than you think. If you haven't started yet, I encourage you to give it a try.
Love comes in many forms. Let this be one of them.
