2016, when the fog was lifting, a time of “old Instagram” which they say is back. // These photos are from then. A time when I was coming out of a postpartum depression that I didn’t even know that I was in. Everything was foggy. I thought that was normal. In 2012 I Instantly became a SAHM and it wasn’t something that I had always dreamed of. It was/is hard. I was missing my old life of going to trade shows and company dinners, and talking to adults. My husband and I worked In the same industry and I’d often ask him, did anyone ask about me?!? I’m sure he thought I was crazy. // He started traveling a lot, Tokyo, Paris, New York, Boston. And I was home in Chino Hills trying to figure it all out. And one day I watched a YouTube video on Macrame and was instantly hooked. It triggered in me a feeling that I still have 10 years later. A curiosity of what my own hands and some rope can make. And it gives me stillness. Calm. Something that is mine. // All of the questions fall away when I pick up rope. The over and under, over and under, the monotony is actually the point. It gives me clarity and stillness wherever there is fog. That is why I teach it, because I want the same for others. 💯❤️

I was sitting in a parking lot waiting on a to go order when I made a decision I regret 5 years later. I made a phone call that I was reluctant to make in the first place. I was annoyed, I literally rolled my eyes and clenched my jaw before calling the number. All of this over an $8 macrame pattern?!? Literally 1,000 other people have successfully figured it out on their own. She sent me photos of her work. I circled where she could improve and explained it. Back and forth we went. Then I said I’d call her. Why, because I was afraid of a negative review on my 5 star reputation, something that I’m very proud of.

I let that one engagement make me shift. “I don’t want to write patterns anymore.” And I stopped cold. But it was the wrong move. I walked away too soon.

Is macrame dead now? I don’t think it will ever be. In an age of AI and over stimulation, making something with your hands, something tactile, something slow, is exactly what people need. And I’m not done helping them learn, I’m actually really good at teaching. I just hope that It doesn’t come down to me calling them. 🙃
