People often ask how I decide what each chair becomes. Honestly? The chair usually tells me. I wrote a little something about it 👇
Where My Chairs Have Gone
At first it was only a notion,
something faint that took hold
as I sat with a bare frame
and traced the line of its arm,
the slope of its back,
the stubborn grace of its legs.
Then the fabrics began to arrive,
not in the shop, but in my mind:
a stripe here, a faded floral there,
a weave from the other side of the world.
And if I was patient,
the chair would tell me
what it wanted to become.
To paint, or not to paint.
Some days the wood wanted to stay itself.
Some days it asked for color.
And the trim,
a quiet traditional gimp,
or something stranger, bolder,
a little eclectic,
the finishing note
that made the whole chair sing.
Now they are scattered
across the United States,
in living rooms and reading corners,
in houses I will never see.
Each one began as a vision.
Each one became real.
And someone, somewhere,
looked at it and said,
you belong with me.
To everyone who saw
what I saw in those frames,
thank you.
You gave my chairs a home.
