🍊🌿 Homemade Citrus Peel & Thyme Cleaner 🧽✨

I made a fresh batch of my citrus peel, thyme and vinegar cleaner. I love finding natural ways to put things from the garden and kitchen to good use!

Thyme has thymol in it which is a powerful antifungal and antimicrobial compound, and is highly effective at fighting off various pathogens like staphylococcus and E. coli. Orange and lemon peels contain antibacterial compounds and also natural degreasing solvents.

Steeping in vinegar for a few weeks, draws out the oils and compounds to create a powerful cleaner (although the best way to extract thymol is to use vodka or isopropyl alcohol)

Did you know thymol is used in EPA- registered, hospital grade cleaners and the compound d-limonene (in oranges and lemons) is used in many commercial grade cleaners?

Harvested some thyme today. This will come in handy this winter to make a tea for cold and flu season (although I don’t remember the last time anyone in our house has had the flu)

Thyme helps loosen mucus, soothe the airways and relaxes bronchial muscles to reduce coughing. Since it has anti-spastic properties, it can also be good for digestion, soothing gastrointestinal muscles.

Spent some time in the garden today pulling out my tomatoes and peppers and getting the soil ready for planting garlic in a few weeks!

The soil was pretty compacted, so I aerated it and added a layer of compost to start rebuilding and nourishing the soil.

The week before planting, I’ll add another round of compost, bone meal, and a little sand if needed, then turn everything into the soil to give my garlic the best possible start.

Gardening is all about working with the seasons, feeding the soil, and preparing now for what we’ll harvest later. There’s something so rewarding about putting in the work today and looking forward to what grows tomorrow! 🌱
