I started out here 8 years ago, never having lived in the country before. I spent the first few years being completely hands off. I knew there was 3 acres of land here on the banks of the Snake River in Idaho, but I didn’t venture into it. I knew there was a creek down one side and a boat ramp down to the cleared land where the boats are launched. There’s a wooded boat ramp down there, which I’d only been on a couple of times. There’s out buildings that I never went into and had no idea what was in them. There was all kinds of metal objects and other stuff here and there.
After a couple of years of being here, I started to get more adventurous. I started realizing that no matter what my husband could come up with to build, there were tools here to do it (or he would make one) and there were supplies to construct the project. I started to get interested in metal and woodwork as I watched him. I started helping on some of his projects such as repairing boats and building things on the wood lathe. He was patient with me and started teaching me the power tools. I dug in and learned everything I could, including basic welding (which I’m not great at because of my eyesight), using the plasma torch (which I’m really good at) and the power tools.
I was really enjoying learning things around here when I injured my back.
