When I was just a young kid I’d get up early on Saturday mornings to watch cartoons. When I got a little older I’d get up early on a Saturday to watch the news and to hear about current events. When I got a little older even, I’d get up early on a Saturday morning to watch home renovation shows and movies that my husband didn’t really care for. Nowadays I get up early on Saturday mornings to watch shows about Wolves with my dog. 🤦🏼‍♀️ Life’s progressions….what can I say, she loves to watch TV!

Finally framing up this piece I did back before Christmas. I have an entire collection of these little ones and I’ll be posting them over the next couple of weeks, but this is the first one that is completed in full. Dried pressed flowers from my yard with encaustic wax, mica powders, and gold leaf. I LOVE doing these and hope I get to do so many more!

Today’s “Art Project”: Encaustic Pressed Flowers

I’ve been collecting and pressing flowers from our yard since last spring. These are my first two practice rounds with this new technique. I’ve already learned quite a bit just with these two practice pieces.

I love working with encaustic (hot painted wax) and every time I do another project with it, I fall in love with it all over again. After a few more practice pieces this weekend I’m going to attempt to do an entire wedding bouquet in this same technique. Wish me luck!

Finally starting up some new artwork over here. It’s been a while. This is a Japanese style of art called “Tataki Zome”. It’s also just called “flower smashing”. You hammer the flowers to release the pigments on to paper or fabric. Then I’m using watercolors, ink, and gold leaf to enhance the compositions. Really interesting and very peaceful practice actually. I’m excited to see what I create today with all these new blooms! During trial and error, I have found that “press and seal” actually holds the flower petals in place the best once they are arranged. Who knew?
