An Update to my ULTRA CLEAR adhesive experience. Sadly, I can absolutely tell you that this stuff is JUNK! DO NOT USE - for ANYTHING!
You may be asking “But why Joan?”
The main reason is it MELTS/ Softens in the heat. Plus, I discovered it also yellows in the Sun, even though the label specifically says it’s “Non-Yellowing”. Grrr!
I had very high hopes for this product, but once again, I was greatly disappointed. I made a Bunch of all clear plate flowers to sell at our recent local garden walk - of which my own gardens were a part of. So days after the garden walk - imagine me going out to check on the beautiful clear glass plate flowers I had just put out earlier in the day in my front garden, only to discover that the adhesive softened up significantly and for one of them all I had left was the puck they were glued to sitting there and the flower is laying in the dirt. Another plate flower had 2 of the plates separate from the back plate, which was still attached to the puck 😐. This was on a day in the midst of a heat wave with temperatures in the upper 90’s F and “feels like” temps well over 100 F. I was able to easily pull apart the individual pieces of these plate flowers with my bare hands. 😡
I realized I needed to completely redo every single one of these flowers. 20 in all. 😤. I Never had problems like this using the GE Silicone ll. I decided to use the heat to my advantage, so I placed all the plate flowers out on the grass in my backyard. I would let the sun warm them up, then I could bring them in to work in my back garage to separate them and clean off the adhesive. I am using denatured alcohol and scrapers (chisels and screw drivers). I didn’t relish the thought of working in my hot garage, so they ended up out there several more days in the sun than I planned. Our heat wave has since passed, so last night I bought them inside to work on in the house so I could watch TV while working on them. Perhaps heating them up with a blow dryer would work too? It worked great. But that’s when I realized the Yellowing issue. At first I thought my dog had pee’d on one, then I found another, then another. What? You could tell the Ultra Clear was yellowing.
I have a few totems that I need to completely redo also. I’m SO frustrated at this point. I should have stuck to the original GE Silicone ll for Windows & Doors. I have a pole totem that is 16 years old I made with that and it’s still going strong.
