Hello plant friends,
As we launch this business, my brain and notes are going so many different directions.
I'm noticing a trend in plant groups, and want to talk about something important that I'm seeing. Transparency matters to me, so I wanted to share a little about how I create educational content.

Everything I post is built on research, continued learning, conversations with experienced growers, scientific and extension resources, and my own experience growing and troubleshooting plants. I spend far more time learning than I do creating graphics. Honestly, I spend more of my time with my hands in the dirt and strive for more of that, it brings peace and health in a crazy world.

I do use AI—but as a tool, not a replacement for knowledge. It helps me organize information, improve readability, brainstorm layouts, and turn hours of research into resources that are easier for people to learn from. Every educational post is from my own thoughts and views, reviewed, fact-checked, and edited by me as it's created and before it’s shared.

Technology has always changed how we learn and teach. Used responsibly, it can make quality education more accessible without replacing expertise or critical thinking.

I welcome respectful questions, corrections, and thoughtful discussion. That’s how we all become better growers, and that's why I am here, my purpose actually.

What I won’t engage with is bullying, gatekeeping, or assumptions about someone’s integrity simply because they choose to use modern tools.

My mission with Moss & Mantle is simple: provide accurate, approachable, clean, reliable research-backed plant education with some plant goodies, that helps others grow with confidence. 🌿✌🏼

I still remember how this journey began, and it wasn’t with rare tropical plants.
It started with a simple tray of garden seedlings.
Every spring, I’d set up grow lights to get a head start on my garden. I’d find myself sitting beside those tiny seedlings every day—checking on them, watering them, watching for the first signs of life. There was something incredibly calming about nurturing those little plants while everything outside was still cold, gray, and asleep.
Then one day, it hit me.
Why was I only giving myself that feeling for a few months each year?
Every winter was the same. I’d sit inside staring out the window, counting down the days until I could get my hands back in the dirt. I was restless. Bored. Honestly…a little cranky. Winter Thia was not my favorite version of myself.
I couldn’t change the weather. I couldn’t change the seasons. And I wasn’t moving somewhere tropical, yet.
But maybe I could bring a little piece of the outdoors inside, and find peace year round.
For years I’d poured my heart into designing landscapes and creating beautiful outdoor spaces. I loved everything about it—the smell of fresh soil, the feel of my hands in the dirt, the rain, the sun, the creatures who enjoyed it with me, the excitement of watching a garden come alive. I realized I didn’t have to lose all of that just because winter showed up. I could surround myself with living, growing things every single day of the year.
So I did.
The seed trays were joined by a houseplant…then another…and another (and we'll stop there and NOT call it an obsession, because I wouldn't want to give my husband the satisfaction of being right 😆) Before long, the grow lights that had once been reserved for seedlings were lighting an indoor jungle instead.
Looking back, I don’t think I fell in love with houseplants because they were rare or trendy.
I fell in love with the way they made me feel.
They gave me something to nurture when the world outside felt dormant. They gave me a reason to slow down for a few minutes every day. They reminded me that growth doesn’t stop just because a season changes.
I think that’s really what Moss & Mantle is about.
It’s not just plants.
It’s creating a home that feels alive. It’s finding beauty in ordinary moments. It’s discovering that sometimes the smallest daily rituals can change the way you experience an entire season.
Plants make me stop and feel all the peace.
I’d love to hear your story.

🌿 Welcome to the Moss & Mantle Plant Detective Files.

When I started collecting houseplants, I quickly learned there was one problem with searching the internet for answers:

Too much conflicting information.

One source recommends one thing. Another says the exact opposite. It can be difficult to know what’s accurate.

My goal with Moss & Mantle is to create a free, organized library of evidence-based houseplant education that helps you identify problems before you treat them.

This is Plant Detective File No. 001: Common Houseplant Pests.

Think of it as the table of contents. Over the coming weeks, we’ll explore each pest in detail, covering identification, life cycles, damage, inspection, treatment, prevention, and more.

Whether you’re just starting your plant journey or have been growing for years, I hope these guides become a trusted resource you return to whenever something doesn’t look quite right.

💚 Save this post for future reference.

I’m seeing a lot of posts lately about the beautiful Monstera Thai Constellation—and just as many posts about what’s wrong with them.

So here’s the saga of mine…

Last year it was over 4 feet tall and absolutely gorgeous. Easily my favorite Monstera.

Then I made one very expensive mistake.

I put it outside for a shower on what looked like a cloudy Idaho day, went grocery shopping, and came home to surprise 90° weather. If you’ve lived here, you know Idaho likes to skip spring.

The Thai was cooked.

I ended up chopping off every leaf but one.

Then the last leaf gave up.

Next came root rot.

I cleaned it up, moved it into a vase with an airstone and frequent water changes, and by winter it finally started growing roots instead of dying.

Spring arrived. I potted it up.

It immediately gave me a new leaf…

…then immediately wilted.

Root problems again.

So I unpotted it.

And accidentally ripped off the only healthy roots it had.

The rotten ones, of course, stayed attached 🙄
I cut those off.

So now it’s back in its fancy little vase, once again contemplating its life choices—and mine.

At this point I’m honestly wondering if Thai Constellations are just a little too dramatic for someone with a couple hundred other plants demanding attention.

But if this plant has taught me anything, it’s patience… and humility.

So here's the official Thai How To.

This is how it's supposed to go. But don't go too much. Or too little... 🙄

Thrips can be a real issue. There are some fantastic preventative measures, but careful consideration of the lifecycle of thrips and what your options are to eliminate them are important.
For our situation, we prefer quarantine and a several week process to ensure there are no stragglers.

🌿 The newest addition to the Moss & Mantle family!

A huge thank you to fellow plant enthusiast Jessie Beyers for letting this beauty join the collection. 💚

It arrived with a couple of spots of mechanical damage from life’s adventures, but otherwise it’s a gorgeous, healthy plant.

You’ll notice I moved it into our aroid mix and a slightly larger pot. While we usually recommend keeping Monsteras in snug pots, this one is getting a bit of special treatment. The plan is to let it push out another 3–4 leaves before installing a tall moss pole, and I don’t want to disturb the roots again so soon after that.

Because nothing says “Grow, baby, grow!” quite like giving a tiny plant 6-foot expectations. 😂🌿

Stay tuned for updates!
