VAN GOGH HUMOR OR A SELF-PORTRAIT ?

Head of a Skeleton with a Burning Cigarette was painted at the beginning of 1886 when Van Gogh was studying at an art academy in Antwerp. Things were not going well. His teachers were impatient with his work while fellow students were equally dismissive of his style. His letters to his brother Theo suggested he was having a mental collapse. He dashed off this painting at the start of 1886. Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith have argued in Van Gogh - A Life (Random House, 2012) that this was in fact his first self-portrait. He would not paint another one (Self-Portrait with Dark Felt Hat at the Easel) until moving to Paris later that year.

By contrast, the Van Gogh Museum describes this painting as a “juvenile joke” meant to display his command of human anatomy.

Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939) became a celebrity in the world of design after creating a poster for the actress Sara Bernhardt. He would continue working for her and other clients (such as JOB cigarette paper) along with other projects in London, Paris and Czechoslovakia. Along with other artists such as Gustave Klimt he was instrumental in promoting the art of the Art Nouveau era.

GO WEST YOUNG MAN !!

James Knox Polk (1795-1849) was the 11th President of the United Stated and is credited with overseeing the greatest expansion of US territory in presidential history.As president, he acquired more than a million square miles of territory for the United States, in part by fomenting the Mexican-American War. His portrait hangs in the Oval Office, a signal that President Trump’s ambition to take over Canada, Greenland and other territory may be more than just talk.

His portrait is by George Healy (1813-1894)

𝑴𝒐𝒏𝒌 𝒃𝒚 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒆𝒂 (𝒄. 𝟏𝟖𝟎𝟖-𝟏𝟎) by Casper David Friedrich

𝘔𝘰𝘯𝘬 𝘣𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘦𝘢 is one of Friedrich's most iconic paintings. First exhibited in 1812 in Berlin, Friedrich's painting enjoyed success but also provocative to many viewers. In his 1975 book, 𝘔𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘯 𝘗𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘕𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘯 𝘙𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘤 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 - 𝘍𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘥𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘵𝘰 𝘙𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘬𝘰, the renowned art historian Robert Rosenbaum has speculated that modern art may owe some of its development to artists (such as Friedrich) rather than just the Paris school of Picasso, Matisse and others.

𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑫𝒆𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝑻𝒓𝒆𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕 𝒐𝒇 𝑸𝒖𝒆𝒆𝒏 𝑽𝒊𝒄𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒊𝒂, (7 September 1843), 1843

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited France for the first time in September 1843. A British monarch had not visited France since Henry VIII and Francis I met in 1520. The visit was a demonstration of friendship between the two countries, even though they had been close to war three years earlier. It was the first "entente cordiale" meant to mend relations between the two countries.

Eugene Isabey's painting depicts Queen Victoria schooner leaving the port of Tréport in Normandy and receiving a naval salute of cannon fire.

Eugène Louis Gabriel Isabey (1803-86) was a French painter, lithographer and watercolorist in the Romantic style. His marine paintings include several spectacular shipwrecks.
