Today in History: Vintage Postcard

On October 2, 1968, Redwood National Park became part of the National Park System, protecting some of Northern California’s remaining old-growth redwood forests. The designation came after decades of logging had dramatically changed the landscape and growing efforts to preserve these remarkable trees.

The redwoods had already been a major draw for California travelers for generations. This vintage 1950s–60s postcard from the Trees of Mystery on the Redwood Highway captures that mid-century fascination, and features Joseph B. Strauss’s poem The Redwoods. The original postcard is available in our shop: link in bio.

Gloria Steinem died yesterday at the age of 92, so this seems like the right time to bring this piece of 1970s history back into the spotlight.

A 1977 “Everything You Have” poster, autographed by Gloria Steinem herself.

Steinem was one of the most consequential voices of the women’s movement, and the changes that movement brought about are part of the history of my own lifetime.

There’s something special about holding an actual artifact from a moment that helped shape the world we live in today.
