At NightOak Outdoor Lighting, we’re continuing to invest in technology that makes the outdoor lighting design process more accurate, visual, and professional for our clients.

By combining NiteLite OS, Nearmap aerial imagery, and our own on-site drone photography, we’re able to get a much more complete view of a property before installation begins.

These tools allow us to better plan fixture locations, lighting zones, transformer placement, wire runs, and future expansion while showing clients how the different areas of their property work together within the overall lighting design.

For our clients, that means:

5 Common Outdoor Lighting Mistakes We See

Outdoor lighting is about more than simply adding lights. A professionally designed system should create depth, balance, and atmosphere while allowing the property—not the fixtures—to be the focus.

1. Overlighting — Using too many fixtures or fixtures that are simply too bright. More light doesn’t always mean better lighting.
2. Lighting everything at the same intensity — Great lighting creates visual hierarchy. Different brightness levels help establish focal points, depth, and dimension throughout the property.
3. Glare — Poorly positioned or unshielded fixtures can put the light source directly in your line of sight. The goal is to see the effect of the light, not the fixture.
4. Using the wrong color temperature — Cool white lighting can make a home and landscape feel harsh. At NightOak, we typically design around warm 2700K illumination for a natural, refined appearance.

Most outdoor lighting issues don’t come from the fixtures… they come from poor connections underground.

At NightOak Outdoor Lighting, we take a different approach during every install:

• Solid copper crimp connections — no wire nuts, electrical tape or shortcuts
• SureSplice gel-filled tubes to fully seal and protect every connection from moisture
• Low-voltage wire buried 2–6 inches deep for protection and longevity
• Sod staples used to secure wire paths cleanly and keep everything in place
