This is a room the whole family can pile into on Christmas morning — every grandchild, every generation, a built-in bench for extra seating, a custom fireplace finished by a local artisan, family photos and sentimental objects tucked into the bookshelves. And details like an antique horse lamp on the table, because one of the granddaughters is a competitive rider and my client wanted items with meaning. Charm, nostalgia, and room for everyone. That's the whole point of this house.

A mudroom and laundry have to work before they're allowed to be beautiful — boots, dogs, groceries, every day, no exceptions. So we built in ample storage, color drenched the space, added wallpaper from England, pegs for all the grandkids coats, and then let it earn the right to be pretty. On a project this size, it's tempting to spend all your attention on the rooms guests see. I'd argue the ones they don't are the real test of a design.

This is The Grandma Cottage — As a grandmother to nine, my client wanted a house built entirely around gathering her family all in one place. I worked on this home from the architecture through the build through every piece of furniture, which was a dream come true and one I didn't take for granted. The kitchen, as the heart of the home, was the perfect starting point for all the interior spaces. Thoughtful European sensibility, layers of warmth and charm and a dutch door that leads onto a screen porch for morning coffee and beyond that, a walled kitchen garden — more on that soon.

I grew up in the foreign service, moving every two years, living across Europe and beyond until I was twenty-one. You learn to notice rooms when you're always arriving in a new one — and how much it matters, when you do, to feel like you've arrived somewhere that is home. That's where my passion for this work comes from. Every room I design is a chance to give someone that feeling. Almost 20 years of design work later, that instinct is still the thing I trust most.
