My go to setup for smaller carvings and detail work. The Echo 2511p with a 12in Cannon Dime tip and .043 gauge chain. Lightweight with plenty of power for smaller carvings.

I started this video digging through my wood pile, looking for scraps that might have one more carving in them.

That’s one of the things I love about making little wood spirits. A piece too small for a larger carving can still become something with a face and a personality of its own. I get to use more of the wood, and I can offer a handmade piece at a price that’s more accessible to folks.

I’ll always want to make bigger work, too. But I like that there’s room in my shop for both. In this Headspace video, I’m talking through why that balance matters to me.

Meet Gumble. 🌱

I carved him from a sweetgum stump right here on the property, where you come up the driveway to my workshop. The fun part? He’s still growing.

Sweetgum trees reproduce from seeds, but they can also send up new shoots from living roots or a stump. Shoots from the roots are called root suckers, and that kind of regrowth is called vegetative reproduction.

So Gumble isn’t quite a finished carving. The tree keeps adding to him, and I’m looking forward to seeing what he becomes.

The magic of making art is that you never know exactly what’s waiting inside an idea. You just start, follow your curiosity, and see where it takes you. The sad part is how many possibilities never get explored because someone was afraid to begin.

We went hunting for treasures today and visited Vintage Blue: Mid-Century Modern, Eclectic & Antique Home Decor in Hickory for the first time. What a cool place! It’s full of mid-century furniture, antiques, art, and decor, and the folks there were super friendly. We came home with a new coffee mug for our collection, while Henry’s favorite find was the rainbow-colored VW Bug outside. 🌈
