I love this spoken word by Freebird I heard it months ago, and saved it for the right time.

I’ve been working in silence for a while now. Experimenting in between production work. Learning and growing in peace. Letting the work speak for itself.

I’ve been taking commission work here and there, if I feel it speaks to me. These chocolate ladies was commissioned by Shauna from ShopTheHood which is a largest black owned business buying guide. She had this wall hanging terra cotta sun on the wall, the kind one would hang in the backyard or a garden, and she thought this would be so much better if it were a black woman. Can you make that?

My response was, well I guess….I could make anything if I put my mind to it. She said perfect, I would like 3, one representing 3 emotions, Serenity, Breathe, and Joy, 😯 (that’s my face). I tried looking up inspiration for something similar, and there really isn’t anything like these, so I had full range to explore and enjoy.

One thing that I love about these wall hangings is that I added holes so that you can accessories them however you want. A couple have holes in the hears for earrings, holes in the hairs to hole flowers. ☺️🌺

A closer look.

First time doing a side handle. I like it! Very comfortable. Teapots are very special to me in my journey in clay. I was obsessed with making tea pots in class back in 2004-2005. I more so enjoyed the challenge. I’m still not good at it. I need to make sure my spouts are high enough so that water doesn’t pour out. But I do like checking in every once in a while with the teapot to check my skills. See if I’m improving.

This is Ted, aka Bananas. I’ve painted several of Ted’s portraits since 2023. It’s like he’s apart of the family. I was sad to hear that he recently crossed the rainbow bridge, but I’m very honored to paint his portraits again and again.

This round we are doing a puppy portrait on an ornament and his staple photo on a mug with a simple black and white sgraffito band on the bottom, and custom bananas on the interior, his favorite fruit.

I start my portraits on leather hard clay, clay that hasn’t been fired yet. I use underglaze by Speedball Ceramics It’s very similar to painting with water color paints, so I start with lighter colors first, then layer up more saturated colors on top with shadows last. Since the clay hasn’t been fired yet, I’m able to scratch away any highlights, exposing the white clay underneath, for twinkles in the eye and any light reflecting off the nose and fur/hair.

I complete the mug with any decorative carving details and of course I had to add the bananas on the interior. I used the designer liner by Mayco Colors to add an outline around the bananas. I was feeling a little creative and added an outline around Ted too, then asked for permission ☺️. The owner loved the added detail on the outside and requested less around his face.

Here’s a long form video of me setting up my first brand new kiln from rohdeusa There are important steps you need to do before adding your pottery, so I wanted to take you through the steps. So grab some tea or a coffee, I have you for 7mins 😌☕️.

First, I have a ECOTOP 145 S. It is hardwired into the breaker system. My old kiln was an old cone sitter with dials and k***s. I never had a screen or a pyrometer to see the temperature or what was going on inside my kiln, so this is all new to me, and I know I’m not the only one. So here’s a quick setup guide for newbies and first time rohdeusa users.

I know you’re excited about firing your pots, but there are some things you have to do first. In order to burn off any manufacture oils and any moisture, you need to run the kiln through an initial firing, empty. This firing is like a bisque firing with a long hold at the end. This firing only has your kiln shelves and post inside, NO CERAMIC WORK.

There are 3 manuals that come with the kiln. One Operating manual for the kiln and parts, one for the controller, and thicker one with all the languages. So far I’m using the Controller manual the most to learn how the controller and programs work. All the programs are listed in the controller manual.
Program 1 is your Initial firing. Run that just the way it is, and you’ll be fine.

You can use witness cones, or self supporting cones if you want to check the temperatures at each level in your kiln. I only used 04, and they all were over fired. But that because of the 1.5 hr hold. The longer you hold at a temperature, the cones will continue to melt. Not sure if it was necessary for this firing, but for sure, grab self-supporting cones for all of your other firings to double check the temperatures at each level of the kiln.
For a bisque, cone 04 & 06, and mid fire cone 5 & 6.
