A quick look at the second half of the 1/17th scale painting going through the steam process. The real-time of this activity you’re watching, not including the 4 hours of steaming, takes about an hour. It’s always scary. A number of failure points exist in this process as the art can be ruined by a single water drop in the wrong place at the wrong time. Thankfully, years and years of work have resulted in a mostly fool proof process. I still get paranoid, in spite of how bullet proof my process has become. During this steam, for whatever reason, my nose told me something was going wrong midway through the 4 hour steam. There’s always a certain smell to the process, which inspires excitement and joy in me because I still love the post-steam reveal. This time, though, I caught a familiar whiff that said “Your roll has fallen into the steam pot water!” I was willing to risk the steam burn and lifted the lid to check. All was perfectly fine! Not sure if I’ll ever get over the fear and paranoia. I assume if I ever care so little about the art being ruined then I should probably stop painting!

Honored to be among the fine art presented at the Hoosier Salon 102 Annual Exhibition last night at the beautiful Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites

This piece is deeply personal to me. I was asked no less than 4 times, “How long did that take you?!” In reality, although it took six months to compose the final gold leafed art you see here, it also took 15+ years. It encompasses all the time and exploration from painting the silk bits that were cut up to collage into this final piece, mark making and failures and sketch work on silk that goes back as far as my beginning of brushing dye onto silk. I call this work my Silk Diary series. It is deeply personal, and an effort to be increasingly transparent as an artist, raw, open, honest in the work.

I hope you take the time to visit the fine exhibition, which is open to the public starting this Saturday through 10/23. A huge congrats to the artist award winners! It’s a beautiful show!

My steamer doing its job flawlessly! One of the best tools I’ve ever made. Holding 3+ yards of high quality silk at a constant temp above 190F with a tool that cost me less than $500 all-in. Thanks, Dad, for letting me use your tools when I was a kid, for letting me tinker around and be in your way and constantly moving the shop light around trying to hold it in the right place while I was still too short to accomplish the mission. Watching you fix stuff gave me the confidence to rig stuff for my own self!❤️

This is the process of prepping 10 yards of hand painted silk art for its 3+ hour steam session. The steam provides the heat and pressure necessary to force the pigments in the dyes to chemically bond with the cells inside the animal fibers. I made my own professional grade steamer using insulated stove pipe and some ingenuity backed up by years of experience using various rice cooker and furnace pipe models I’ve made in the past. My new steamer reaches and maintains the necessary 180F minimum, and actually is around 200F based on my Bluetooth meat thermometer I’ve used for monitoring. The silk gets rolled up sandwiched in newsprint, which acts as a blotter to insure there’s no back bleeding during the steam. I’ve had every accident during steaming through the years, to include the entire steamer falling over in the kitchen ruining a 94”x55” piece of banner art which had to be entirely remade! Oh well. You take it on the chin, have a pout and get back to work!
PS- This is my 1/17th scale sketch maquette for 4 days of the 7DAYS project I’m working toward, so you’re not getting a peek at my color!
