Throwback Thursday- More cross- pollination between old junk and new art. And this one was actually my first foray into painting ink on women. In this case, I was just beginning to learn about “old school” tattoos, which I love the look of, even though I myself will never get one. But since I love surface decoration of all kinds, tattoos are really right up my ally. This piece has a lot of vintage and antique components: old scooter, architectural salvage, bed spring, croquet stakes, and so on. And I had also begun to study late 19th century circus performers and the fact that tattoos found their popularity among some women of the period.

Favorite Collections Friday: somehow all these Peppy and Salty shakers kept showing up in my life. In this case, the sum of the parts is what makes me love them. There are people and kitties and dogs and they just shout “1950s!”

Favorite Collections Friday: homemade doorstops! I especially love the cat and dog doorstops. So these I keep in the dog and cat entryway to my house. Most probably made in the first half of the 20th century.

This is what happens when your love of junking cross-pollinates with your life as an artist. Found this funky bowling tray during one of my junk hunts and decided it needed to be repurposed.

Favorite Collections Friday! These are just SOME of the pieces of ceramic artist Laura Wilensky that I have acquired. I first met Laura in 1975 when we were both exhibitors at the American Crafts Council show in Rhinebeck, NY. Laura’s booth was across from mine. I have loved her work since then. We couldn’t afford to buy it back then except for one piece, so 95% of our collection has been bought since, on eBay! Laura is still creating great pieces. Look her up!

- These are just some of my 100+ cookie jars. It was back in the 90s when I discovered eBay and began hunting for cookie jars. On this antique hutch we’re all my blue willow dishes and platters. Away they all went and in came Fiesta Ware and cookie jars. I discovered that I really only like those from the 40s and 50s, and my favorite manufacturer was American Bisque. I think this is because of the way they were painted and glazed- they have the same look as my carnival chalkware.
