Transform a simple wire mesh bin into a stunning, heavy-duty concrete and river rock planter! 🪨 This easy DIY upcycling project adds a beautiful, natural touch to any front porch or garden space. Here is exactly how it’s done:
The Process:
1️⃣ Prep the Mold: Start with a standard black wire mesh wastebasket. This acts as the structural skeleton for the planter.
2️ Apply the Concrete: Using a trowel, apply a thick layer of mixed concrete to the inside of the mesh bin to create a solid inner wall. Then, apply a generous layer to the outside, completely covering the wire mesh to form a solid, cylindrical shape.
3️⃣ Smooth the Surface: Once the concrete is applied, use the trowel to smooth out the exterior, ensuring an even surface for the stones to adhere to.
4️ Add the River Rocks: While the exterior concrete is still wet, press smooth, multi-colored river rocks/pebbles firmly into the cement. Work your way from the bottom to the top until the entire outer surface is covered in a beautiful stone mosaic.
5️⃣ Fill and Plant: Allow the concrete to fully cure and dry. Once solid, fill the planter with rich, dark potting soil.
6️⃣ Final Reveal: Plant a lush, variegated Hosta in the center, firm the soil around the base, and place your new custom planter on the front porch for a gorgeous curb-appeal upgrade!
Materials Needed:
Wire mesh trash can / wastebasket
Concrete mix (pre-mixed or Quikrete)
Yellow bucket & trowel
Smooth river rocks / pebbles
Potting soil
Your favorite outdoor plant (Hosta, Fern, or Ficus)
