Board meeting: “Let’s build a chicken-wire arch for strawberries.”

“With chicken wire?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“We’ll figure it out.”

“Wait, I don’t think I can build that; can we modify it into one giant hanging strawberry basket that runs from one end of the fence to the other?”

“How long is the fence?”
“Only 120 feet.”
“Perfect. THAT’S IT.” 😂🍓

Started building.
Hung the first section.
“This is absolutely going to work.”

Hung the second 20-foot section.
“This is absolutely NOT going to work.” 😂

And just like that, our grand vision of 120 feet of hanging strawberry baskets became 20 feet of hanging strawberry baskets.

But THEN we harvested three established strawberry plants already growing on the farm, pulled up all those runners, tucked them into their new hanging home and discovered they’re already BLOOMING. In AUGUST. In NEW ORLEANS HEAT. 🍓☀️

Was the design modified? Yes.
Multiple times? Also yes.
Did we dramatically reduce the scope? Absolutely.
Is the final version perfect?

YES. 😂🍓

Welcome to farming, where “we can figure it out” is apparently part of the business plan.

Because everyone keeps asking us… 🌱 what soil are you using?!

We use Schmelly’s Supernatural Garden Soil whenever we can and there’s a reason. It’s rich in compost and organic matter that helps feed the soil, hold moisture, improve drainage, and build stronger roots.

We’ve seen the difference compared with traditional bagged topsoil, and our plants have too.

Healthy plants start with healthy soil. What you put underneath really does matter. 🌿

Even better? Schmelly’s Dirt Farm is LOCAL. Supporting local doesn’t stop at the farmers market—it can start with the very dirt we grow in.

And we love supporting a business that’s supported by local partners and sponsors helping keep food scraps out of landfills and turn them into something that grows more food right here in our community.

Shop local. Compost local. Grow local. 🌿
